Christmas Nails Tutorial

Here's another step by step for simple Christmas Nails. Again, you've still got plenty of time to practice, so let's get busy with those airbrushes. I've laid out the different pictures and descriptions in what I think is the most logical order, but if there is something you don't understand, I'm just an email/pm away. Don't hesitate to contact me. Don't forget, there are lots more tutorials at the following link Nail Art step by steps Ok, let's get cracking...

Step 1: After applying an airbrush base coat, lightly mist a layer of white over the nail.

*****

Step 2: Spray the nail blue.

*****

Step 3: Place the star mask in the top right corner of the nail and spray white. Leaving the mask in place, spray yellow around the edges of the star. Remove the mask.

*****

Step 4: Place the moon mask below and to the left of the star and spray white. Leaving the mask in place, spray yellow around the edges of the moon. Remove the mask.

*****

Step 5: Place the christmas tree mask below the moon and star and spray white. Leaving the mask in place, spray green.

*****

Step 6: Using a little clear top coat, add a crystal rhinestone to the centre of the star and multi-coloured bullion beads to the christmas tree. Using a dotting tool, add tiny white dots to the tree and finish off with a star shaped rhinestone to the top of the tree.

*****

Step 7: Apply an airbrush compatible top coat, allow to dry, then wash around cuticles with soap and water.

*****

Here is a list of the paints and masks that I used for these nails:

Medea paints used:
Cloud White
Icy Blue
Yellow
Leaf Green

Pre cut masking used:
'Christmas Decor' by Too Much Fun
'The Skies the Limit' by Too Much Fun

Still not anything about airbrushing nails...yet, why do you spray it white first and then blue?

Hi, Because most of the paints are quite transparent I spray it white first in order to give a 'blank canvas' to spray the colours on and allow the 'true' colour to show - you get a good colour without having to spray too many layers of paint, and the fewer layers you need to spray, the better.

Thanks Jen & Ruby.

Ruby, this one is easy peasy - honest! (The next one is a bit trickier!)

Although you can't really tell in the pictures (so I missed it out in the 'instructions'), after spraying the nail blue, I then sprayed purple around the edge of the tip, leaving a slightly paler oval of blue in the centre. Makes the background a little less 'flat'.

Hi........ do you mean for freehand, Paula? If so, I haven't a clue as I'm useless at freehand! Your best bet would be to start a new thread under the Nail Art Forum and ask what peopl use. Christie does fantastic freehand nail art and I'm sure if you pm her she'll point you in the right direction. Actually, there are quite a few people here who do really great freehand art - so they'll probably be able to give you and idea of the type of brushes to buy. I know 'Filbert' brushes are popular for doing flowers.

these are great Jackie, but I struggle when im trying to do more than one nail ie whole hands!! I assume the only way to spray a colour, leave the mask in place and spray another colour is if you have 2 airbrushes on the go? otherwise you'd need to keep changing paint for each finger (does that make sence? lol)

Or are they only intended to be done on one nail and not all 10? xx

Hi Sherrie, yes, I'm afraid unless you have more than one airbrush it's a case of having to change colours for each and every nail, unless you have an airbrush with side cups which makes it a little easier. You don't have to do all 10 nails, you could make one finger on each hand a 'feature' which would be a little easier.

I am new to all this, can't you spray one colour on all ten nails then swap to the next colour??? Correct me if this is an obsurd suggestion, i am just trying to figure out how it all works!

Airbrush nails and freehand art brushes

Makes sense to me to spray 10 with one colour then change, but I don't have an airbrush yet so maybe Im wrong. Freehand brushes I do loads of freehand and use a Vrush or was is Vbrush anyway you can buy them on ebay. Otherwise I use sable brushes from the art shops. Hope that helps.
