Competition help needed -
08-01-05, 08:41 PM
I am a bit miffed as the competition course that I was booked on has been cancelled. I have been told by a good pal that I am not allowed to get the chicken suit back out of the cupboard, and I have to enter!!! I really want to enter the Nailympics and poss Excel, but have a few queries..........
1. I have found a good hand model, long nail beds, nice hands etc, the only trouble is that she has quite a few very small warts (not witch like, just small lol!) on one of her fingers. Would I lose marks because of this? 2. It was asked a while back about whether or not a white French finish in the gel category is mandatory, beneficial to scoring, as a recent winner did not use a white gel. Can someone clarify this? 3. If you have to do a French finish then do you only do it on the unpolished hand? 4. In the Nailympics rules it states that to qualify for a novice you must not have entered a competition before. But I thought that you had to have been in the industry for less than 12 months too, is this so? 5. Anyone want to fight me for the wooden spoon lol? (ie last place!) I know there a few questions, so have numbered them in case you can't answer them all. Many thanks as always! |

You only have to do the unpolished hand French. The right hand is all about the red polish painting. Good Luck! |

Hi babe,
1.Right as far as the little warts are concerend are they on the cuticle edge or just on the finger ????? Are they likely to cause problems during an enhancement service ??? They might be classes as distinguising marks........ so check with the Comp organisers or maybe Marian could help here................ 2.Some Comps require a fench finish to the unpainted hand......... again check with comp rules for this........... I personaly feel that if it is possible to produce a french look then thats what I would choose..............because you are marked on smile line..........so there are points to be had............. 3.The right hand is polished with a red cream enamel and the left hand has a high buffed, not polished finish, unless you are using a gel system and then a finishing gel, ..........but again check the comp rules for this............... 4.Competition rules can vary from Competiton to Competition, so be guided by the written rules......... 5.Fighting for the wooden spoon lol............ hmmmmmm maybe ???? If you are in doubt about anything regarding Competition rules, check with the Competition organisers, they are the once setting the rules and should be able to explain everything in detail to you................. HTH |

Thanks for that Ruth and Glo, didn't realise that the rules could vary, so I guess the best thing to do is get in touch with the organisers.
The warts are around the area at the middle joint in the finger so would be visible when judging, but wouldn't be a contra indication. Hey Ruth, I really don't think you'll be fighting for the wooden spoon lol!! Good luck wishes to you (and all others who are entering) and hope you're up on that winners podium! |

Hi Comp Geeks
I can help a bit! Sassy, if they are warts then they are a C/I and, in theory, would have to be covered but....there can be nothing distinguishable on the models hand. Angel fingers is right, she should be able to have them blasted by the comp. Specific rules need to be checked with the individual comps, they are all different depending on which one you do (all the Prof Nails ones are the same though but some of those rules have changed bewteen the last comp in Manchester and this one!!!!) Bring your own red and remember to bring a cream, NOT pearl or any other finish. My advice for this hand would be do the whole hand, get rid of every last scratch, bring to a shine but don't spend any time on this, don't use white tip powder or gel (less stress) and get it painted PERFECTLY before you put all your attention to the other hand. So many points are lost on painting! This will give it time to dry properly and you're not painting in a hurry. Then concentrate on those smile lines and amazing finish on the other hand. If you have time left, there is always a bit of buffing to do! Use at least 2 finishing buffers |

Thanks for that mum. I am really struggling to find a replacement model in time! If you do gel do you use the sealant layer, or do you buff to get the shine? Really miffed that my course was cancelled so any advice would be appreciated, but think I may have to wait for another competition - wouldn't want you judges to die of laughing!

No judge dies laughing!!!!! They just think it's great to compete!!!
You could def sort the warts out in time! With gel, use the sealant but really break it off the free edge to stop the rounded end. Leave yourself time to put mistakes right e.g. dips, gaps, uneven zone 3 edge, dust specks etc You can do it xx |
