Exclaim Can having your nails done cause miscarriage? - 11-03-05, 01:18 PM

I had a client ask me this the other night.

My response was..."If it was that easy to miscarry, all the women who wanted abortions would just go and have their nails done!"

This must have come from the article in the paper a while ago regarding working with solvents.

So, frustrating that we are up against these kinds of myths!

Just had to have my say..sorry!

I have had 4 miscarriages in total, and know as much as there is to know in what to try and avoid. I would be happy to do someone's nails that were pregnant and not feel they were at risk.

Thats what I am saying...I don't think there is at all. Please don't think that I am sensationalizing.

The truth is that nobody knows what causes miscarriage, unless somebody has a genetic disorder, that has been found out after many miscarriages.

I had a miscarriage, (before I was doing nails and I wasn't having nail enhancements at the time either). I was smoking at the time, and thought that could have caused it. I rode my motorbike aswell and thought that maybe I had strained myself. I was also taking the pill at the time and thought that had caused it.

Who knows for sure? I mentioned it to my midwife when I was carrying my first, Leah as in the early stages of pregnancy I had been lifting 2ft paving flags to build our patio. I was concerned that I may have done damamge. She said "think of all the heroin addicts who manage to have fairly healthy babies, if it was that easy to miscarry, people would start up smoking or some other activity to try and cause it."

I do have Polycystic ovaries, so that may have caused mine...again though it isn't proved.

I have obviously thought about this a lot in the past due to my experience. I just think that it is natures way of saying that it wasn't quite time. Nobody knows for definate what causes it. We always look for something to blame and as females, I think we can be quiote irrational, escpecially where hormones are involved, so we blame ourselves or something that we have done.

Wow, that was a bit deep...again..sorry!

I KNOW ON MY COURSE WE WERE TOLD NOT TO PUT NAILS ON ANYONE THAT WAS PG I AM NOT SURE IF THEY SAID ALL THE 9 MONTHS OR JUST THE FIRST FEW MONTH.

THIS WAS NOT BECAUSE THEY CAN CAUSE A MISCARRIAGE! IT WAS TO COVER US FOR INSTANCE IF THE WOMEN WAS PG MAYBEP MONTHS SHE HAD HER NAILS DONE WENT HOME AND THAT DAY A FEW DAYS LATER SHE HAD A MISCARRIAGE! THE ONLY THING SHE COULD THINK OF WAS OH! I HAD MY NAILS DONE IT MUST HAVE BEEN THAT!!!!!!

WE ALL KNOW THIS WOULD NOT BE THE CASE BUT LIKE I SAID WE WERE TOLD BETTER TO NOT DO THEM THAN BE IN THAT SITUATION.

No way should pregnancy be TAUGHT to be regarded as a contraindication to wearing nail enhancents. This is so irresponsible.

There is much information here on the site regarding this issue.

Nail products are perfectly safe to use on any client including pregnant clients.

Not too sure about miscarriage, but so I read, the use of MMA has been fingered as a factor to cause defects in unborn children.

Like I said, so I read. Haven't seen any evidence to back this up mind you.

Don't worry about going on!! I am thinking maybe it wasn't too long ago, so when you start you can't stop talking about it. I am lucky as it is 4 years since my last one and have now finished having children, so don't need to worry anymore.

I totally understand, especially when someone starts talking to you, like this woman, who obviouly has her concerns, but hasn't stopped to think she is not the only one. Don't let this put worries or doubts in you mind, but check out the information available so next time you can answer confidently without it playing on your mind.

I had one client who was pregnant the whole time she wore my enhancements. She now has a beautiful baby boy...

The only reason that she had them removed was for her planned c-section.

YES ok I am sure they are perfectly safe I am not saying I was taught that they were not safe!

All I am saying is we were told to not do a womans nails until she was over the 3 month period of being pg. (just looked up in my notes for that info)

I would say to my client that I would rather wait until she was over the 12 weeks stage as with her hormones changing and body the nails might not last as they should do. I would NOT say oh I am not doing your nails because the products are harmful to you as this is not true. With being a x hairdresser I have wored with all sorts of products I am not silly.

Miscarraige happens more often in the first 3 months 12 weeks. If it is going to happen it will I have had 3 of them you can not stop it.

You do look back and think oh what did I do for this to happen! All they were saying is not to put yourself in the posion of that person saying it must have been my nails! when it was not!

I have heard many times can not think of any now that you have been told to wait until you are over the 3 months period before youcan do things.

What about hair colours they now say women that are pg should noy colour there hair! I have had mine coloured for years I have 5 living children I am also a x hairdresser. I have heard of hairdressers that will not put a colour on pg womens hair! I know women that will not have there hair coloured while they are pg.

It is very hard writting this all down and hoping that you read this like I am saying it all I do hope you get what I mean it is always easer to say things. I think this is how misunderstandings happen in this group we read thinghs the wrong way.

Caz,

I understand what you're saying, and guess I don't know what I'll say for sure until I'm in that situation, but I know what you mean about people wanting to find a cause, I've been there done that, and I probably would have blamed it on my nails if I'd had them done, just because it makes you totally irrational at the time. I think I would just give an informed answer and let the customer decide for herself.
