Unqualified nail tech! -
15-12-11, 09:55 PM
Basically there's a girl in my area who has no qualifications in beauty she's taught herself to do nails from a shed in her garden, everyone on Facebook are talking about her, she's charging £8 for a set of nails and she's using nsi I mean come on I don't have a problem with anyone trying to make a living, I'm currently still at college trying to get as much practice in as I can, there's no way I can compete with £8 for a set of nails, surely she has no insurance and she clearly has no idea about contraindications on one of the pictures it looks like one of the girls has paronychia! Sorry for the rant girls it just gets me mad xx

Well don't let it get you hot under the collar.
Do you compete with 'Messers'? I don't ... I forget about them for the joke they are. Put your energy towards your education and don't give these ones the attention you are giving. they are so not worth it.

There is also a lady in my area that does this, she charges £10 for a set of Acrylics, £5 for pedicures and £10 for a Holistic massage and although she does seem to get a lot of customers at the moment, I don't worry about it as i know my prices are good based on the treatments i offer and the standard of work I do. I think a lot of people will try her out because shes so cheap but not many seem to return. x

We have a lot of girls on Facebook who do this - nails for £5, hair extensions full head for £90 using 18" hair!
For me, they aren't competition because i don't WANT that type of client! Why would I want someone who is going to pay £5 for their nails - they obviously don't know or care what a good set of nails should look like, they have no idea about the endless education required to be on the top of your game. They can stick with their cheap techs using inferioir products on their dirty kitchen tables Same with hair - I could go shave next doors dog and also offer a full head of that for £90 - would I? Heck no! I use high quality products, trained with a high quality educator and charge accordingly for people who wish to INVEST in their appearance Keep your chin up hun - the clients you want to be working with wouldn't dream of going to a back street butcher for their nail services xxx |

but the thread reminds me of a commercial on TV a few years ago... A barber had a cut rate place move in across the street with a big sign, "$8 Haircuts!" a few months later the cheap place is out of business, and the barber has a new sign, "We FIX $8 haircuts!" |

Don't worry about it, some people just want whoevers cheapest. The ones that only want to pay £8 aren't worth having in the first place. I find the most loyal and appreciative clients are those who understand and value a quality service and who are happy to pay for it. Keep your standards high, dont even begin worrying about this girl. She is not your competition, be competitive with yourself and aim for every set of nails to be better than your last, xx

Hi ladies just wanted to add a reply that is slightly different...
After years of getting rubbish acrylics done that didnt last. I decided to teach myself so I could apply my own and save all my wasted money. I did just that, by watching the creative nail course videos on youtube. I practised on myself for 4 years, and eventually moved onto doing friends and family using all CND products and methods. I was having family coming back time and time again, as their nails were lasting at least 2 weeks and they loved the look of them. I am very fussy with my own nails and am therefore a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to doing others. I have now just passed my acrylic nail course purely so I can get insurance. On my nail course, I didn't learn anything different to what I had already thoroughly researched and practised myself. Including sanitisation etc. I am sure you'll agree that even a newly qualified nail technician will experience liffting, nails not lasting etc etc until they have had alot of practice. So I just wanted to put it out there, that you dont have to get annoyed by people who arent qualified, may be worth helping them out a bit by letting them know that without insurance they can get sued, even if the problem hasnt been caused by them. I am really glad I learnt in the way that I did, because after a 3,4,5,6,or 10 day course, you definatly dont come away with perfect long lasting acrylics, it takes practise. So for those girls that want it enough to start from scratch and research stuff, lets just give them the help they need to get there, rather than getting irritated over nothing. Because realistically, if their nails are that bad then you shouldn't be loosing any customers, even if they're only charging £8. So if your business isn't going great maybe you need to look at what you need to change to make it better, rather than blaming it on someone else.
