Three A's! -
09-02-06, 03:27 PM
Hi everyone.
I posted a thread on here a while ago, asking about the credibility of the online / home learning course I am doing. Its with 'Netlerners' I got my grades today, of my first three assignments, and I got three A's. I nearly fell off my chair as I have never got an 'A' in my life!!! lol Essay 1 - The composition and growth of the natural nail - 1000 words Essay 2 - Common diseases and disorders of the natural nail - 1000 words Essay 3 - The basic stages of preparing a client's nails for the application of varnish and other enhancement products - 1000 words. - They did send me a book - cant remamber what its called now - but it was more for someone who wants to spend more time on their nails at home - NOT for teaching someone the basics of becoming a nail tech. I have gone out and got 'The encyclopedia of nails' By Jaqui Jefford and Anne Swain - If I had not gone and got this other book before I even started the course I would have got nothing! Comments on the result paper was " Looking at your work in detail, there are no problems with either the content, presentation or style - your excellent grades reflect this. Some good strong answers that promise for the work to come." - I have reaserched my A*** off, as I think the more knowledge the better - you need to understand alot more than just 'Putting the stuff on the nail'. I'm just a bit concerned, as I am soooo pleased at getting three 'A's - but I'm wondering whether they just give them out 'willy nilly'. I'm not blowing my own trumpet here, but I do think I have a natural flare for nails. I'm entering the photographic competition this year - and I think the nails Ive come up with, together with the shot are stonking! For someone who has had NO practical training, I do think my work is good. I went to a local salon to have my nails done, just to try them out - I know its not professional, but they charge £50 for a set of acrylic, and £25 for infills every two weeks! The nail on my ring finger of my left hand broke off after TWO DAYS! The work I have done on family and friends lasts! They are happy with them and people always ask me where I get my nails done! - at the moment I'm using 'Mercia' products from my local sallys - they accepted my study papers and allowed me to buy there. Im really thinking about going to a local NSI trainer, and getting some one to one training. Im worried about my overall professional image, and want to open up my own salon, but it all seems so far away! Sorry for the long post, but comments are welcome, good or bad! - suppose its insecurity! |

congratulations on your grades, you should be proud of yourself. I dont think its unprofessional to go to another salon to check out the competition, I am sure loads of us have done it.
Regarding their nail 'breaking off' after 2 days...... how did this happen? I am sure that you must have caught it or banged it etc as nails just dont break off without some force being applied - this is something well worth remembering when your future clients come back and tell you that they just floated off in the bath or just pinged off when they were just sitting looking at them Good luck for the future, I am sure you will be a great nail tech, and good luck for the competition too! x |

The nails took the tech 2 1/2 hours! I do a set in around and hour and a half, sometimes longer. But she was obviously not trained very well, and kept going off to 'get something' - there were other people waiting to have their nails done, they were getting really annoyed at the wait.
The nails produced were thin in the stress area, and thick at the free edge???? I was just going about my daily business, and the nail started to split just above the smile line. She had filed the edges so much that they went white and looked 'lifted' the next day..... |

I would reccomend doing one with hands on practial training! you need a professional to asses your work! Id also reccomend buying some good books - The encyclopedia of nails by Jaqui Jefford and Anne Swain is brill - an absolute bible - I wouldnt be without my copy!

Sorry if I sound a bit daft but have you trained already to do nails? Can you get insurance etc with this online course? Are we allowed to name and shame other techs on here? It just sounds a bit bad to tell everyone where you had your nails done and how bad you thought they were.

Well - yes you can get insurance with this course - but I am due to have training with an NSI trainer soon, as I dont feel that this course is enough to consider myself as 'Qualified'.
I dont think I actually named the technician did I? Just stating that you can pay £50 for a set of nails, and then have one that breaks? - doesnt sound good to me thats all - was just using it to back up my point about my work lasting longer - and me not being Qualified yet! And the fact that I know where the 'stress area' is of a nail, and the face that the free edge shouldnt be so thick???? Sorry if Ive offended anyone with my post! Just my opinion! |

Well - Sorry once again if Ive caused any offence - the was not my intent at all - suppose I'll have to be more careful when posting in future - just in case someone jumps down my throat!
By the way - I don't like being called 'luv' - I found that very detremental. Beware newbie geeks! Beware! |
