"Murderers thumbs ... " - 12-04-06, 03:10 PM

Ok - so made you look. I havent got a clue what these thumbs are called but my mum and my nan (and my german teacher) had them. My MUM calls them murderers thumbs - they are very bulbus, and flat, and the nail bed is very long and narrow with a uber wide free edge. Think of a plumb stuck on the end of a normal thumb. Does anybody know what the CORRECT terminology for these is AND does anybody have any tips about enhancing them. Even the biggest 0 tip is too narrow for mums thumb. She also hates them and gets everso upset as her hands are beautiful and just "ruined" as she thinks by these thumbs ..

any tips ?

I know what you mean... some people have whole hands with bulbous fingertips.. (if that makes sense) - I think there is a term for it.

I used to work with a guy a few years back in a call centre and we used to call him ET (Cruel I know, but I was only 16 and immature....)

We use to call them Hammer Thumbs because they look like they have been hit flat with a hammer. Make sense

Someone else started a thread about these thumbs the other day.
Star nails do extra large tips and these fit well as one of my friends has these "hammer thumbs". Give it a try, I used them with L&P and don't do them too square or long.

Redface brachydactyly type D - 24-04-08, 11:04 AM

I am not entirely certain on the name of this condition (I actually have thumbs like this too, though.) However, I've searched on the web and what's come up is a condition related to a genetic disorder called brachydactyly type D. The broad thumbs are just a mild form...some people are afflicted with forms that are much worse. Anyway, as to the nails...I usually just get a larger tip and trim it to fit. Try keeping the nail on the shorter side or you end up looking like you've got a strange growth on pudgy, short thumbs.

Plus, the point was that the biggest tip sizes doesnt fit these thumbs. The only alternative (never tried it in these type nails) is to sculpt.

Problem is E-lucy hasnt been on here since October last year.

Murderer's Thumb - 08-10-08, 10:19 PM

Here is the official name for the thumbs: Brachydactyly Type D, also known as "murderer's thumb" or "potter's thumb." I happen to have two of them!
