Sunscreen, lifting & discolouration - 18-06-09, 10:11 AM

Morning everyone.

I'm doing my friends nails before she goes on holiday next week. I use NSI Balance gels.

I've read on a couple of threads that sunscreen can cause lifting and/or discolouration. I saw that Deet or Acetate are the main culprits.

Does anyone know if this is how the ingredients are shown on the sunscreen bottles?

This is her first time having enhancements and I don't want her getting put off thinking that's what will always happen. Of course I'll tell her it's most likely down to the sunscreen if it happens and not to let it put her off them, but you know what people can be like.

Thanks
Lx

Sun Screen - 18-06-09, 10:27 AM

I've heard that sun screen can make them go a bit yellow, but I don't think it causes lifting. I didn't have any problems with mine whilst on holiday and I used plenty of suncreen.

Sunscreen is definitely a pain in the butt for holiday travellers - I cringe every time someone books an appt to come in and get her nails done for a beach holiday. I spent a lot of time talking to them about what could happen and then I put Total Eclipse topcoat on them as it is sunbed tested and really helps.

I also find that sand is really hard on the nails - causing some lovely lifting.

Poo poo on holiday nails!

I have the Calgel topcoat that I bought a few months ago when I had my nails done. Do you think this might help any if I give it to her to use whilst away?

It probably won't help significantly as the suntan lotion/insect repellent will still get under the nail where you can't apply top coat, although it may help on the top.

Yes Deet is the main culprit, some sunscreens have built in insect repellent with is Deet. Yes it will be shown on the ingredients list.

Remind you client to try to use deet free products or be sure she wipes her hands throughly with babywipes or wash them if possible. You can't prevent it but she can help by minimising the impact as much as possible.

I simply advise my client to wash their hands (or swish them in the water quickly) after application - even that helps!

Thanks very much. I will tell her to try to wash her hands after applying her sunscreen.

I always swish my hands in the pool then dry on my towel or wet wipe them as soon as I have applied sunscreen and never have a problem.
I also however, always use either OPI liquid buff, or glass seal (can't remember brand but from 'atyourfingertips') as this seems to give my nails longievity while I am making sure that all my clients nails are beautiful and probably helps whilst I am on my hols!?

I have found that during the summer (more often) that the topcoat can sometimes discolor. Kiwis love to slip, slop, slap the sunscreen on and we do eat our citrus in the summer (I have sometimes found citrus can discolor).
Lifting??? No, there is no difference between the seasons.
I do offer those clients who do experience a little discoloration, nail polish remover and topcoat for home care maintenance, or I simply buff to a high shine and sell them a buffer

Oh crap, it did not read the original post correctly, apologies,, I went off on a tangent about l&p.
I have not had a problem with gel enhancements lifting with sunscreen and as for the discoloration, I have not experienced this. However 90% of my clients are l&p.
