I have tonight read a few threads that could have been answered far better if the peeps who had put them on had done a search first. This is simply because we have in the past had a lot of very experinced people answering these questions, who are not on now/ no longer come on here regularly. that is not to maline the peeps who have answered but, a lot of space is taken up on this web site to allow us to access ALL the info that has ever been entered on here. Please maximise your knowledge by reading everything on here about the subject you want to know about.
Of course that does meen that your children will learn to cook and your partner to live in a messy home, or do it him self because once you start digging you will find your self following all sorts of links. The world of geek is a huge and addictive place

This topic has been covered many times before and the opions have been mixed. Some say that a search should be done first..........others (such as I) feel that techniques and opinions change all the time so what may have been relevantlast year, may not be now. Also, f we all just searched and didn't post...........it would be a very sad and lonely place.

Now don't take this the wrong way as I say this a little tongue in cheek; but, if you'd have done a search, you would have seen that this has been covered before and you could have saved youself a post.

LOL Kimmie!

I have to say that I am one of the ones that feels that things do change, so it is good for the question to come round again. Also if any Geeks can remember a great thread that was relevant. then as often happens they will add the links and then all the info can be read.

IMO it also gives the Geeks who asked the Q's before the chance to start answering some IYKWIM xx

Whilst I do agree with Kimmi to a certain extent, there have been quite a few posts recently on topics which we have discussed very recently. Even sometimes when I click on New Posts, there is more than one thread of the same topic.

What I am trying to say here is, if you do a search first and find a recent thread then read and learn but if it is an old thread then feel free to post a new question.

I understand but if someone has to read all the previous posts to find something simular to their question it would take a LOT of time. And since the geek members change so do the opinions and maybe new ways or techniques to solve the problem where they want an answer to.
Ofcourse nobody should ask the same thing again when it has been asked and answered just a few days ago "is easy to track back when its just a few pages back"
But I am talking about threads that have been posted months ago...
That,s my personal modest opinion ...

I have asked questions before now I know for a fact I read on the forum before but when I've asked again I can see the reason I didn't find it was I had the spelling wrong or I didn't know the correct term and didn't find it. Sometimes I've asked again simply because reading replies in other topics has thrown up differing opinions leaving me unsure still as to whats right for me.

you also have to give newbies a break,it takes a little while to get the gist of things.

Finding a forum with like minded people can be quite exciting. Posting without searching will probably always happen, often by posting a thread like this you "may" be preaching to the converted.

There's quite a bit to learn ....... when you look at recent posts, we are expected to use paragraphs, correct spelling (my pet hate, which seems to be ignored, even with spellcheck) and you have to use the correct grandma.

I would never be so brazen as to lay down the law as a geek (or premium geek), i'd leave it to the mods to do that, but then again, this whole post has been repeated ad infinitum if i posted about spelling mistakes, i'd have to do it daily (or bump an old post) if i whinged about grandma i'd have to do it daily (or bump an old post) or using the search feature, or using paragraphs......so .......ummm (you get my drift).

I hope the layout, spelling and grandma of my reply makes for adequate reading, i'd hate to feel intimidated or chastised by more experienced members whilst finding my feet in a new environment.

(i love reading your posts they always amuse me!! )

As quite a newbie myself it can be a ittle intimidating on this site when you see the vast knowledge, and sometimes it takes alot of courage to post ANY kind of thread in the first place!! and also if you are training for example its hard to know exactly what to search for!! maybe the newbies like myself just need a bit of guidance and not intimidation..............

But also i can see how maybe some of the hardened originals on the site, may get a little pi**ed when they see the same topics covered all the time!(sorry in advance if its ever me!!! )
six of one and half a dozen of the other!!

Hi. i have an idea. if the people who are complaining dont want to read the same thing over and over again then just dont enter the thread. you dont have to get involved in it if you dont want to. but it does help being able to put your question across to people in your own words rather reading what someone else has asked and it kinda having relevance. i dont want to offend people but this is a site for everyone not just for people who have been on here for years and i dont think that playing god and trying to make up rules is very welcoming for newbees. and also some people find it really hard to spell correctly and use the correct gramma all the time and i for one dont want to have to come on here and worry about my english because of what others may think.

I agree with this. Perhaps it would help if only a brief search was done which at least would reveal if the topic was covered recently.

Hope you don't whinge about grandma too much Zoo, lol!

As a newbie I did find the search facility a bit daunting, but it does help when peeps post a title which helps the subject be found in search.

It can also be an incredibly time consuming task to search a subject thoroughly if there are already several different threads on one or similar topics. Sometimes it is simpler and much quicker to start a new thread. As Kimmi said, I like the idea that new and fresh information and ideas can be bought to the forums by newbies.

I always do a search first which is why I don't post many threads! However it is blinking frustrating when you search and find a thread that you think will be relevant and with loads of posts in it that all read "do a search" or "thank you" or the worst one is "I want to know the answer to this so I'll watch this with interest"!!!!! So maybe those that reply in threads should think a little to help those of us who do do a search!

Also I know spelling isn't some people's strong point, but if you don't spell properly, particularly the technical words then your post won't be picked up in a search option ... just a thought!
