Make up artist as part time work? -
01-11-09, 10:34 AM
Hi all
I have recently started a full time job in a very high pressure enviroment and i really hate it!! I now a full time job, 2 kids and a mortgage and i've always been interested in make up artistry(amongst other aspects of the beauty world). I have many questions but the main ones are. 1. Is it possible to manage full time work and be a mua part time or is that just not feasible? am i being to aspirational wanting to manage everything taking account of my circumstances? 2. I need some training (im in glasgow) and are there any(inexpensive) very short intensive courses that I could do over a day or two? that way i could book leave from work? I cant consider a part tiem college course as I did start a parttime course at college but i couldnt keep it up. it was too much hassle travelling an hour to get to college with everything else i do. I notice the scottish beauty school do a make up course. whats peoples opinion on it? 3. Do i need insurance to do just makeup? 4. Is the recession affecting this market? Also whats peoples opinions on the market for muas in glasgow? would anyone say the markets saturated? 5. what might my outlay costs be for i.e kit and equipment? I have a good set of brushes but thats all. 6. I have no contacts in this field and how the heck would i get started i.e getting work? rights thats a lot of questions but i really would welcome any comments really. Thanks |

i did my beauty at liverpool academy and it was one day BUT you have to do a portfolio for 6 weeks and do alsorts!! day/evening/special occasion/wedding, also false lashes,
then the exam... it just isn't something that you can do in a day or two in my opinion, make up kit is not cheap, you need a HUGE range of things, colours/textures... so on plus sponges/brushes cotton pads, tissues, throw away mascara brushes the list goes on , alot to think about good luck xx |

have a look at www.makeupadviceforum.co.uk there loads of mua on there who will be able to point you in the right direction regarding training etc
i work part time doing bridal and occasion makeup, i also do the odd party and makeup lesson, but its been a long hard slog and im still building up my kit and portfolio and trying to get my name out there i love it, but its harder than i thought it would be .. ive spent a small fortune on my kit and training (approx 5k so far) im a way off breaking even, so you have to be pretty dedicated and prepared to pay out quite a lot to start up, but if its what you want to do then id say go for it |
