Threading - is it difficult to master? - 17-12-09, 11:08 PM

Just wondered if a one day course is sufficient to learn this technique?

My old beautician went on a one day course. She said it took her about 3 hours to master the technique of holding the thread properly. It just takes practice time to get your speed up.
She was one of those people who thought she could pick anything up and when she booked on the course, she insisted that she would be able to offer it from the day after. She never did offer it as she wasn't confident enough doing it!
I was shown how to do it once and it was a nightmare-lol
I think if i ever took up i would have to use the method where you use your mouth so that you have 2 hands free. I did manage to get one hair out but i've no idea how

No, it's easy if you practise. Like anything, you're not going to be an expert after one day. xxx

I did a threading course earlier on this year, it has been a very worthwhile investment for me. I spent ages watching people at shows etc, then subjected my dear hubby to me having a go. I hated the idea of having a thread hanging out of my mouth i thought it looked unhygienic and was told there were other ways of doing it. I then went on my course, which ironed out my glitches (i kept getting knotted up) and then like Kim has said it is practice practice practice. Once you have the hang of it practicing on arms and legs you then try pinpointing specific hairs to practice your precision. Ive been doing it for about 6 months now and I am still not super quick but you do get quicker every time you do it. I think the worst area to thread is the top lip. I find this area a nightmare. HTH

Oh and by the way holding the thread in the mouth is soooo much easier than trying to use a figure of 8, i cant get my co-ordination right for this.

Hey all,

i trained in threading last year. although i dont do much threading treatments.. i practise alot on friends and family. ive really gotton the hand of it... id recommend taking the course.. its very interesting and handy to have. just takes practise. practise makes perfect!

most areas are easy to thread, eyebrows are a little trickier and take time to do.

good luck xxx

There is actually a third method, the Iranian technique which is where the end of thread is tied round the neck (loosely!) instead of held in the mouth. Sound bizarre but it just as good. The figure 8 method is not as precise for eye brow shaping.

I would say so. I do the training for it and yes 95% of students do pick it up in the one day. Its about picking up all the right techniques on the day and like anything at first you may not get 100% of the hair but in time you get more effective and faster. Its only speed that you will not master in that one day. The students that do the best are those that start working on clients, friends and family more or less straight after the course. Like I always say you may be able to learn to ride a bike in one day but unless you keep it up you may lose it. Hope that helps.

I completed the VTCT course which is 16 weeks long and I would say that no, you can't master it in one day. The beauty of a long course is that you have a LOT of practice. I'm very confident about doing it now, even eyebrows, but I know that had I done just a one day course it would have been a false economy.

I would completely disagree with this last part...I did a 1 day course, and must admit that I found it a very difficult treatment to do well, although I could physically "do" it after the end of the day.

With lots of practise on friends, family, and clients, I'm happy to report that threading is my fastest growing treatment, and popular with 90% of my clients now. It also gives me the largest profit margin per treatment. I love doing it, and I'm good at it!! So for me a 1 day course was perfect, and definitely not a false economy.

I did my training with Sapna, (who has already posted a reply) well over a year ago and I have been threading almost every single day since my training. I would say a day is long enough to learn, there is not that much to teach really, however.... to get up to speed, I would say takes a month or 2, but you must keep it up every day. Its a great thing to learn, I'm really busy now and its my most popular treatment. I work from home and thread about 20 people a week from home, plus I go into clinics locally to offer this service xxx ...ps the figure 8 method is actually for self threading and is not accurate enough to use on a client.

Yes I would say one day to learn the technique is enough. If you are someone that doesnt like to go away on your own and be left to practice then I would say go for a longer course. I didnt find it hard to master. It might sound strange but save some leg hair...it will give you something to practice with when you get home.
The course I did where more than happy for people to go back to another traning class f.o.c if they needed more help, which I thought was good xxx

I have considered threading but salons seem to charge peanuts for the service so I don't see how it could be a great earner as I realise a lot of time and effort would have to go into mastering the skill.
