Tan solution going on wet!! ARRGH - 06-09-08, 03:43 PM

It would appear that no matter what I do, I cannot seem to spray anyone where the solution goes on 'dry'! I always find that the upper chest area and sometimes arms/legs take ages to dry and it appears wet for about 10/15 mins before the client puts her clothes back on.
This is costing me money as I have clients who come to my home based salon and end up having to book them in for longer just to dry off.

I use Sienna solution and a Busy Bronzer machine(also Sienna)and am starting to doubt my ability to do the treatment as there is more risk of streaking/running when the solution is applied 'wet'. I have tried adjusting my gun and tightening up the density dial but then I can't see where the solution is going whilst spraying! I also get intermitant splattering whilst using the gun which is really annoying and have descalled it properly but still the problem continues.

How should the solution look like on the body when applied as I'm sure it wasn't like that in the training, just a fine mist and could put our clothes on straight away?

Please help, don't know what I'm doing wrong???!

How long have you had the compresser hun? Has it ever worked properly?
It should be going on as you say, like a fine mist. Areas that are hairy usually build up more tan and go a little wetter but this is corrected easily by using the buffing mitt. It sounds like the gun is turned up too high which is causing too much solution to flow out.
Why dont you give the company a call and they should have someone that can explain to you what to do. Failing this, then maybe you have a faulty machine which they will have to send you out another.

Great advice Kylie... you could also have a read of the Spray Tan Tutorials on the tutorial section of the Geek... there is some good advice about how to check the settings of your gun, as well as some other great hints and tips on Spray Tanning...

I've been using the Busy Bronzer for months and it's been fine. I suggest you turn the dial on the back of the gun all the way off (clockwise) and then turn it a quarter turn anti-clockwise, spray onto paper towel and see how much spray there is, gradually turn the dial up until you have a light to medium spray on the paper, NOT a wet soggy paper! You should be able to clearly see the solution on the paper.

As for spluttering, (which may also be the reason you are getting over spray and not able to see where the solution is going,) put your solutions in the fridge or a cool box with an ice pack. Pour what you need in to your gun a few minutes before spraying and warn the clients it will be quite cold.

Failing the above, give your trainer a call or supplier.
Hope that helps.

or it could be that you are spraying too slow? or too close? I would say do the couch roll test too... is your needle clean? that could cause spluttering too, I would strip it right down and give it a good clean, then start with the couch roll test and see if its any better.

Perhaps all the parts of your spray gun need a good clear out?

The water based solutions absorb into the skin quicker, so it drys loads quicker than original solutions.

But try what others have said, turn your gun down, spray faster or further away!!

If you have turned your gun down to the minimum setting and still feel that you are utilising to much liquid (by the way how much solution are you currently applying?) and are having a secondary problem seeing where you have sprayed then two suggestions for you
1) Ensure you have adequate lighting to the spray tan area
2) try a water based solution with more initial colour guide as it will dry much faster and and also you will be able to see where you have sprayed much more easily.

Also dont start putting yourself down and loosing confidence...weve all been exactly where you are now...it just takes usage and experimenting(which you seem willing to do) to get things right.
keep at it ..try different solutions till you find the one that suits you and your customers

Thanks very much for advice. I have contacted Sienna who are sending out a new spray gun as it sounds dodgy to them. XX
