Scottish tanning laws- are we heading the same way?? - 19-11-08, 11:33 AM

After Scottish MPs voted to impose new regulations on the tanning industry I have been concerned that we might be headed in the same direction. I found this article on the internet which I thought you lot might be interested in. I think we all need to do the most we can to regulate our own industry and act responsibly so that the Government does not have to get involved! Let me know what you think:

Tanning Safety

Following recommendations from the World Health Organisation, Scottish MPs recently took the decision to outlaw unstaffed tanning premises. This decision was taken because it was felt that too many people were unaware of the dangers of excessive sunbed use. There is a need for both salon managers and staff to know be aware of the health and safety guidelines and to encourage customers to engage in responsible tanning. The Government has drawn up a set of guidelines to help salon owners, this is a summary of the main points: -

v Questions managers should be able to answer:
  • What are the nature and extent of UV hazards?
  • Do you know which health risks are associated with the use of UV tanning equipment?
  • Do you know the extent to which exposure to UV vary with the type of lamps fitted in your equipment?
  • Has the equipment supplier given you information n the extent and magnitude of the hazard?
  • From this information do you know how to decide what advice to give an individual customer on the:
a) duration of each tanning session?
b) periods between each session?
c) total number of sessions per year?

v Staff should be able to…
  • Answer questions on the health risks associated with UV (see ‘Customer Information’)?
  • Give different advice to customers with differing skin types, as they may
be in a particularly sensitive group?

I would like to think that this should be done already, it seems so basic. Yes lets hope it becomes the norm.

It is indeed likely that once the Scottish regulations have been fully integrated and put into practise that the rest of the UK will follow.

There does in fact already exist a recommended code of practise for sunbed salons throughout the UK ...details of which can be found on the TSA website The Sunbed Association

The TSA is an excellent port of call for these sorts of questions to be directed to.
