Sad Spray Tan Help/Alcohol?! - 14-04-09, 09:22 PM

Hi Guys,
I did my Spray tan training a couple of months ago and one of my friends chucked me straight in at the deep end about a week later by organising a tanning party for 9 people!!!!
Anyways, the first 4 ladies seemed to be ok but everybody else had been drinking quite a lot by the time i got round to doing them. Some were coming out patchy, some had the tan collecting in their creases, some were touching it after and making it blotchy then coming back to me asking what could be done so it turned out a bit of a nightmare!!!
What i wanted to know was could these things be due to the alcohol and not just me as i know it makes you sweat a little bit more.
I must admit that it has really knocked my confidence and made me doubt myself so haven't really advertised to the general public since then!
Also i have a few other questions maybe you could help with:
  • When the tan seeps into the neck/arm creases (or if there are bits such as their own finger marks!)will it even itself out after the client has showered or will the end result turn out patchy?
  • Whats the best way to touch up an up-even area? Spray some of the tan on a face cloth and dab on?
  • And if i get a slight overspray so it starts dripping...what do you do...dab it with tissue & respray?
Thanks so much for any advice in advance

im not sure about the alcohol part of the question but in regards to overspray, yes i was taught to use couch roll/tissue kinda screw it up but leave a flat surface and then blot with that. i was also taught that if the client rubs some off to respray lightly, dab around he edges and advise to concentrate on this area when showering off, just to rub it a bit more so it blends.
i use celebrity secrets btw

Hi

My friend does a lot of spray tan parties and I'm hoping to do these to and was quizing her about it and alcohol

She says she gets there early and tries to get in, tan and out as quick as possible so that she's not there when the drink kicks in

After every tan she gets each person to inspect it and say if they are happy with it and tells them to be careful, especially if drink is involved. At least this way if they come back to her the next day she can say they were happy when she left.

It may be the alchohol, but with that many people in the same room (presumably) the temperature is bound to be increased. Your machine will also generate a bit of heat too. Next time, before you arrive you could ask the "host" to ensure all radiators are switched off, and that a window or two are open to creat some ventilation.

With perspiration causing seeping of solution in neck or elbow creases, I very, very lightly massage with a Fake Bake buffing mitt (dark brown velvety smooth mitt). That normally sorts it out.

To touch-up an uneven area, I would lightly spray it then perhaps a little buffing, depending on where the area is.

With overspray causing dripping, this hasn't happened for some time so I'm sure it won't happen with you for long either. I just love the Fake Bake buffing mitts and they are perfect to wipe off a bit of a mistake, using a clean mitt to buff the area left behind, then respray as appropriate.

I have 5 or 6 of these buffing mitts on the go and sling them in the washine machine, ensuring I have a couple of clean ones with me at all times.

Hope that helps and that I've made sense xx

another thing my friend advises the host to get straws in to avoid drink getting onto their lips and making a white circle round them

When i did my training i was taught to flick any runs with a bit of couch roll.
Haven't had any runs for ages but when i did it worked well.
I also have a few buffing mitts but have only ever had to use them on myself after using the automatic booth!

We shouldn't really be doing treatments of any kind on people that have been drinking. But I can see the problem here, when they are socialising. You have been given some good advice, especially from Sunspray with regard to the heat and the ventilation, and from Carron about getting in and out as quickly as possible.

I do regularly tan a friend (I don't really consider him to be a client LOL) who is always high as a kite when I arrive, and I have learned I have to be extremely bossy with him, I have to say things like KEEP STILL! and DO AS YOU'RE TOLD! I can't really see that working with a proper client, but I would be sure to keep eye contact during the consultation and let them know fairly firmly that a good result is dependent on them following my instructions.

My 'friend' did have really bad orange palms one morning, having run around nekkid for about half and hour after the tan, so now I MAKE HIM put his pyjamas on straightaway

Don't let your clients touch their freshly sprayed bods!

Assuming you weren't drinking also and as high as a kite it would seem that the problems you have had here are due to the clients excessive drinking while waiting.
Unfortunately alcohol will inevitably cause problems with tan outcomes due to a combination of the body's own natural state after consumption and of course the less than careful initial treatment of the spray tanned skin by the client...touching etc etc.

Unfortunately a spray tan party without any alcohol simply would be well erm...boring

It is important as a therapist to point out the dangers to a host as well as all the participants and ask that they try and keep things sensible ...well at least until after you have finished...it is important to highlight the possible outcome problems...as a pro its always best to be up front in giving information on potential problems rather than not and finding yourself on a back heel situation after the event.

As Zoe has indicated...be firm and in control of the situation...warn people on potential outcome problems if they drink heavily and also have fun yourself

Thanx everone for your words of wisdom. I have done a couple more tans on friends since then and they turned out fine, so its boosted my confidence again slightly!
The room was very warm at the time and they had had a bit to drink (i was on the water!) so i guess that was a big lesson learned...when i do anymore tanning parties i am going to state cleary "definately no alcohol until you've been sprayed"!!!!!

I have done quite a few tanning parties. They are great fun. I don't see the harm in clients having a little drink.
I have had a few that have spilt wine on their chest etc and have just dabbed it down and sprayed over it with no problems.
I even had a client phone me to say that she had splashed water up her arm when i had gone and that was also fine once the guide colour had washed off.
If you get slight dripping just dab it gently.

Make it clear to your clients what will happen if....
It's better than telling them 'just don't do it'

Don't let it put you off there is so much money to be earned out there for this hun. Just see it as a lesson learned, correct your mistakes and move on xxx

Aaaw thanks for that Chick. Must admit i am slightly nervous about advertising to the public incase anything goes wrong! Got me business cards lined up, leaflets and equipment now all i need is a good kick up the you know what!
I think i might do that and tell peole what will happen if they do want a drink and then leave it up to them!
I invested in a buffing mitt aswell so hopefully that will help aswell.
