Hi,
Some offer it the other way around say 6 mins in sunbed then the spraytan, something to do with the PH balance of the skin taking the tan darker. I haven't tried it yet, but will soon, will have to get my spray tan room all ready, hubby waiting for the call to say I have just left the sunbed shop, and him waiting in spray room with tanning gun at the ready RUTH ........Come on we now want your chemistry knowledge to sort this one out. Lotsa luv x x x x x x

If you had a spray tan first and then on the sun bed, what about the risk of sweating - I assume it would have to use the standing sun beds. |

However, UV is well known for initiating "free radical" reactions, where the energy from a UV ray is absorbed by a molecule, splitting it into two "free radicals" - which are highly reactive molecular fragments (on account of having an unpaired electron) - and can then go on to react with other molecules. That is why excess UV can be detrimental to the body - as cell damage can occur as a result of free radical reactions taking place within the body's cells. Thankfully, "anti-oxidants" such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E work by "scavenging" free radicals (causing the vitamin molecule to react with the free radical to form a harmless by-product) - what you really don't want is for free radicals to react with DNA in the body's cells - as that is what can lead to mutations that can cause conditions such as cancer. In terms of whether to have a spray tan before or after a sunbed treatment - it would depend on whether the UV was more beneficial to the result of the spray tan before or after the treatment (e.g. the spray tan would be better given before the sunbed treatment if it enhanced the reaction of the active ingredients in the spray tan with the skin) - and if the spray tan formula would protect the skin against UV damage or exacerbate it. And that is what I need to research before I can give an answer! Posted via Mobile Device |

Sorry, I should have summarised this better!
The aim here will to be balance the quality and longevity of the tan against the potential health risks. So we would be looking for scientific reasons as to which order of treatments would give the best tan with the least health risks. Posted via Mobile Device |

From what I did read about this a couple of years ago.........Yes it has been on the go that long, it was the pre use of the sunbed making the skin already a bit tacky / sweaty and altering the ph balance that was to make the tan take deeper and last longer.
But I will wait for our own chemistry expert on this..........Ruth you are our own little scientist star ![]() x x x x x x

In trials it would seem that it has better results if the spray tan is applied first and then exposure to uv.
Quiet what is gong on with this mix isn't fully understood however it seems that the skins exposure to the UV light seems to speed up the spray tan development process. It is more comfortable and seemingly more effective if a spray tan solution that is used is not heavily fortified with initial colour guide...this helps in terms of the sweating issue somewhat also. It could also be that the slight sweating as a result of being exposed to the UV light and heat that this greatly assists in neutralising deodorants etc on the skin and brings the skin back to a more neutral PH level...one that spray tan solutions work best on??? We did in fact undertake some considerable research on this subject some years back when the first skin cancer scares started to surface in the UV sector and considered at that time to develop a VTU which incorporated a spray tan system....it was our EOS solution that was in fact specifically developed to work in this combo machine going back 6/7 years now when I took a bottle of the stuff on holiday and sprayed some on me before lying on the beach soaking up the UV rays...I quickly went black as black ![]() It was felt that less powerful UV lamps could be used with this combo concept and therefore reduce skin cancer risks and yet still offer a good tanned look...... ![]() Our prototype is up in the archives somewhere and maybe now worth digging out and having a re look at things given the continuation of the skin cancer issues relating to UV tanning and in particular that there does seem to be noises being made that authorities in the republic of Ireland are considering banning sunbeds completely... They were the first to introduce bans on smoking in public buildings a move followed by the rest of the EU.....so a complete ban on UV tanning could well spread throughout Europe. Already many of the traditional sunbed dealers have diversified their business's due to global melt down(forgive the pun) of UV tanning by the consumer and with there being something like a 50% chance that ROI authorities will ban their use completely many sunbed salons are already making plans to convert to spray tan outlets. This next 12 months is certainly going to be an interesting one for this sector
