Starting a mobile spray tan business - 14-09-09, 04:53 PM

I am considering starting my own mobile tanning business. I have previously carried out a small amount of spray tanning for a friend and enjoyed it so would like to persue it as a business. I have not had any training so i know im going to have to do that. Basically i wanted some advice on how to get started. I currently work but want to get out my job. Am i likely to generate much business so that i can afford to do this as i dont know how successful it can be to do spray tanning as a business. Any advice and info on best machines etc would be very much appreciated

Once you decide who to go with the training they provide will cover not only the procedure of spray tanning but also how to market your new little empire and how to achieve realistic money. The training should cover all the areas you can market and advertise on that require little extra money.

The problem with asking how successful someone you become depends soley on you and the wrok you put in to it. The more you put into the business the more you get out.

Focus on realistic earnings not over inflated expectations that some companies tell you that you can earn. Whilst its not uncommon for tan techs to earn in excess of £300-£400 a week, they have usually been at it a while and built up their clientelle over the years.

Start by asking all your friends, collegues at work at family if they would have spray tanning done by you and what they would pay.

Then ask them all to hold parties for you seperatly and invite people you don't know to it so it opens up a wide and new client base for you to exploit.

Its great to see you are going into this with your eyes open as I have come across so many people who bought kits that they sat in a corner to collect dust because they thought they would be able to quit their full time jobs within weeks.

Have a search on the threads on here too, theres a lot of tan techs and they all vary from the really busy ones to those that have just started out and trying to build a strong client base.

Good Luck x

Hi, I do spray tanning and you need to do some research on the net, as there are different machines to suit different techs. Some machines are not very good if you are doing parties and the machine needs to run for several hours, some are quite heavy and not suitable for mobile. Some guns suit certain liquids etc. The business also has its peaks and troughs so its a good idea to incorporate something else into your services that will keep you going during the quiet times.

I offer parties of 4 or more and get one free, as you are only setting up once which is less time consuming. I also do occasional offers and a loyalty scheme 2 for £30 (usually £20 each) or when they have had 4 treatments they can have one free etc.

Another idea is to get into a local corporate company. Get in at Xmas time, or their corporate do's and use a room for them to visit during their lunch hours.

Make sure you get your training and insurance it can be a messy thus expensive job if you are not careful.

Hope this helps
Lisa

Hi Jane, this is Dawn not Steve as my name suggests!! The difference between the two machines is that one has to have a rest between long stretchs and the other the 5008 can go all day. The difference in performance is about the same but the biggest thing is the price. In my opinion there's no advantage in paying the £70-£80 more for the T200.
I have worked with both machines and I think I have told you which one I'd go for
I do know of some salons not too far from you that you could let you have a go on both of them if your still unsure.
Good luck
