Hey peeps!

My salon has been open since Dec 07 and has just started to get busier however I have been majorly surprised that the nail enhancements side of the business has not taken off as I has expected.

I seem to be very busy with facials, spray tanning, waxing and mani & pedi but I only have a couple of clients who have nail extensions. Because I have not been doing many sets I feel I am not specialised in this area now and that it maybe worth taking on someone who can really maximise this side of the business.

My idea is too rent space in my salon (which is big enough) to a qualified nail tech, who ideally has their own client base. I was thinking maybe they are currently mobile, or working from home, or in a salon that they no longer like.

I was thinking of charging a flat weekly rent to include all bills, i.e telephone etc and they can have keys to open when they want. I would help book their appts if required and pass any of my clients over to them, or future bookings.

They would need to work set hours pref over the busy days weds-sat which they would inform me of and stick to and provide their own stock.

I plan to continue with the mani's and pedis and so keep a full stock of up-to-date O.P.I nail colours which they would be welcome to use at no extra cost.

I was not planning on taking a % of their earnings but am unsure what works best for me as the owner and them as a rentee!

My question is...Is this something a nail tech would go for and what would they want to pay? I have read previous threads for a couple of hours but not got the answer to my questions, any advice would be great.

I am concerned about taking someone on and then them giving it up 1-2 months later, I want to be fair from the start,

Thanks

The only thing I would say is you can't dictate to them when they can work, they're renting space so all you can do is advise them of the busiest days and hope they have the common sense to work them.
Have you tried contacting your local salons to see if they rent space and how they do it?

Once you have decided how you want to do it and have found someone make sure you have a contract that you are both happy with.

This sounds to me a good deal, and if I were at a stage of being ready and in the right area, what you are offering would be a serious thinker for me. I don't know about prices in your area, but a couple of years ago a hair salon near me (in Norwich) had a nail station for rent that I seriously thought about. They were offering me that I could start with one day a week, and gradually build to more, the rent was £20 per day, I was to provide my own tools, products equipment, but the cost of the power, etc. was to be included in the rent. Basically, it was a spare corner of the salon that wasn't being used, would have started me off, and gave them some extra income. Everyone was a winner! Pity circumstances meant I couldn't do it.

I wish you well, and hope this works for you. I do agree with what's been said though about not being able to tell people when they can work. They are working self employed so they can be their own boss, and that means working when they want. However, if you charge a set rate, you will get the money whether they work or not. As long as they don't take the 'P' (not turning up without warning, etc), it should be a winner for you and them!

I think you sound very fare in what you are trying to achieve but :) perhaps you would be better looking for a partner rather then a rentee,
1, because rentee's can as you fear up and leave after a couple of months.
2, there was a thread on here about tax inspectors looking at rentee's as employee's because they are in your salon on a regular basis and doing regular hours and salon owners were getting hit for the tax bill.
3, a partner has a vested interest in the business as a whole growing, which is a good thing for both of you
4, someone who is currently self employed, mobile or home based would need some incentive to add to their over heads.
I wish you luck with finding the right person for you and your business:hug:

Hi were is the salon, this sounds like a good idea to me.

Hi there

thanks for all your replys and I have taken them into consideration, I'm only just getting to grips with the salon myself and this is a whole new aspect so any thoughts outside the box are welcome!

The salon is in derbyshire for anyone interested, any further details required and anyone interested is welcome to Pm me!

I was also considering renting my salon out to people who maybe do treatments that I am not qualified in on days that I don't currently open...maybe some one who just wants 1-2 days a week to have a base to work from in say holistic therapies, reflexology or sports injury?

I am trying to offer my clients a wide range of treatments and feel this is best acheieved by people who "specialise" in a specific area rather than trying to be good at everything, plus it would be nice to be around others who share my passion for this line of work. keep your thoughts coming though, it is great to hear everyones view!
