May I have some advice please?

Popping over from nails as I don't really have a clue about skin.

I'm an aged :( geek, mid(ish!) 40s, spent my youth in California with no concept that the sun wasn't just "healthy" and I've smoked for years. As a result, I'm in serious danger of starting to look like an old, unloved crocodile handbag!!

My question is, apart from a huge lifestyle change, is Botox likely to make any kind of difference or do I just need to accept the errors of my youth?

Any advice v gratefully received! x

I've not had Botox (yet!) but I've had fillers on my nasal labial lines which improved immensely! One of my sisters (also in her 40's) lost a lot of weight rapidly after she separated from her husband and this caused her to age and sag, she has both advanced Botox injections & fillers which has given her face a mini lift and more volume with the filler. It's made a massive improvement for her both in herself and looks, she still has skin treatments/peels on a regular basis but she is happy she did it x

Forgot to say please do look into the experience of the doctor/ nurse if you look to have it done as there are some Practioners that are not good at all, recommendations are best x

I'm around your age and I've had restylane fillers around the lip to smooth out the lines, I didn't end up with a concrete trout pout it all looks natural and smooth. I'm going to have botox around the eyes and forehead next

I'm over the moon with the results so far, I'm doing it stage by stage so I don't go from age 40+ to 20 in one hit lol.

As above choose your clinic wisely!! I researched for over a year before I had it done and the Dr at the clinic near me has been a Dr, surgeon and an anethiest all his qualified life

Research well, go for the consultation (normally a small charge for that) don't forget botox isn't an instant result like dermal fillers, after about day 3-4 you start seeing lines diminish, around the 2 week mark it had its full effect.

I'm not growing older gracefully, I'm going with one hell of a fight lol

I super intersted in getting Botox, I'm not 40 yet but my face looks like I am! Working alongside these beautiful young girls nowadays dosent help the old self esteem out much either lol! I'm wondering tho how often do you need to get it re done? I know you can choose to have it done like 6 monthly etc but what I wonder is does it eventually ware off completey so the lines look how they did prior to Botox? I've got deep ridges (from scowling probably 😂) between my brows and the bridge of my nose, that would be my first area I'd sort out how often would I need to re do it? Finances I'm thinking about I don't want to start something and not be prepared for maintanace lol

I'm not a fan of fillers, plumpers and botox, so can't comment on them, but I would say look at the skincare you're using.

There is no point spending a lot of money on these treatments and your actual skin looks in poor condition. A lot of GOOD skincare can really make a fundamental difference to your skin and can actually improve sagging and fine lines - you don't have to go to the needle.

A good salon can give you a realistic idea of what is achievable, so even if you do go forinjectables, at least the skin over them will look great!

I would also reiterate about asking for recommendations. Don't go to the beauty salon down the road - like the one near me, that offered "Half price Botox"!

Please!!!

That's fab advice, time to find a decent skin care salon near me and get educated! X

As above DO NOT go to anyone offering botox at high discounts in a salon, you don't want to end up with a concrete face lol

I agree with Vic - possibly look at alternates to injectables such as mesotherapy, microdermabrasion and a good skincare regime. Although my sister looks great in my expert eye I can see her skin isn't in great condition because she will not use a skin regime she thinks johnsons baby wipes are enough! (Yes I can tell her until I'm blue in the face about it she doesn't listen). X

All I would add, is a recommendation or two.

Wear a GOOD - not necessarily high - broad spectrum SPF all day, every day. Don't use one mixed into your moisturiser. If you wear a mineral make up like Jane Iredale, it has an spf in of about 18, so that's fine.

Don't drink excessively - you can often tell drinkers by the slackness of the facial muscles, and obviously, don't smoke!!!

I'm 51 this year and am looking flipping great lol!!!

Thank you ladies! Vic, I suspect you are probably right & my lack of a proper "regime" has definitely not helped! I've more or less given up the drink, and the evil ciggies are next on the hit list. So...stupid questions 1 and 2 - I had assumed that sun protection in moisturiser was sufficient. What would be a better alternative? And, how do I find a good facialist??? Sorry for the endless questions, but I've GOT to do something!!

Are you anywhere near Salcombe???

And SPF in moisturiser is often not retested for the efficacy of the SPF once added to the moisturiser. You are also meant to reapply SPF, but wouldn't want to use up your expensive (!) moisturiser. Moisturiser is meant to sink in and SPF is meant to sit on the top etc!

There is a skin geek I can recommend in Salcombe. If you're interested, I'll PM you her number.

Hi Vic

Sorry, weirdly only seemed to see the start of your last post...

Salcombe is about an hour from me, so by Devon standards, quite close! Lol :). Yes please to the PM, would much rather see someone on recommendation. Thank you for your help & advice!

Hi,

I would echo some of the previous statements. Botox +/- fillers could make a big difference, but find a practitioner that you trust. Most offer free consultations, so go and have a chat and ask about qualifications, insurance etc..... We won't be offended.

It's impossible to say how much difference they could make without an assessment of your face shape/structure/skin quality so don't believe anyone who hasn't seen you.

I also agree that youu need to look after the skin you have as well... No cigs, no sun, sunscreen.

I don't like fillers and Botox. I think they are poor value for money as well.
Neither of these treatments actually treat your skin, they are concealing and camouflaging the true condition of your skin and they are temporary - so I can't see the point.

Repeating the advice given here earlier. A good therapist will tell you what can be done and support you through the process. You need to think about the condition of your skin (elasticity, wrinkles, pigmentation, thread veins etc) and the condition of the underlying structure (the muscles).

Electric machines are the way forward, sadly organic products and excellent facial massage cannot really compete :(

I have a client that came to me after using Botox for 5 years. She hasn't needed a top up since and I assume she's up on the deal financially.

Can you name a few products that decent beauticians would use so I can google local salons that use them, I'm searching facials but not finding anything local perhaps if I could search brand stockists I might get further
