Hi I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advise on how to attract reliable longstanding staff. I'm a small village salon and I operate the beauty side if it. And have two part time self employed hairdressers, both of which I'm not 100% happy with. I'd like another hairdresser but particularly a therapist to relieve me a bit to be more front of house one day. I'm so busy with treatments. I've had a couple of self employed therapist that haven't lasted long at all. They just don't seem to attract clients, although I keep advising them it takes time. There are other trained professionals in the village that specialise in certain things i.e. Nails/lashes. And they operate from home and gave a decent clientele.

My issue is they charge so little and seem very settled. I'd love to approach them to offer them a position in the salon. It would be so much better if I had a therapist which had a client base.

But I see it pointless approaching them as can't think what would attract them to come when I'd be charging commission and they already have a lucrative business working from a room in their house. But I'm finding this is happening so much more, ppl are working more from a beauty room at home or sheds and salons can't get decent staff. Any thought or ideas how to attract therapists to stay? Thanks

We have this problem also, 2 staff members, 1 amazing 1 crap who has now started working elsewhere doing the same treatments on a self employed basis 5 mins away from our salon and is completing treatments on our clients!!

We want to take on an apprentice but cant till feb.

Need another member to join but want on a low hourly contract and offer extra hours as overtime as money is tight so its soooo hard...

Is they're working self employed near by why are you allowing it? Should be in the contract as a grounds for dismissal as gross misconduct.

We are battling with it!!!

We haven't got it in staff contract - 1 massive lesson learnt there..

Trying to now implement safeguarding our client list additions so she cant do our clients :(

If she's employed by you, she shouldn't really have access to any sensitive client data such as contact details. If she's been employed less than 2 years and is on a probationary period, just get rid.

Nightmare. She can't take your clients under data protection laws. They can follow her if they choose to do so but she can't contact them or access their records.

Sadly with Facebook etc it's very easy for clients to find ppl, I've just started working from home in my outbuilding, I would never go back to a salon as usual chair renters tend to want their cake and eat it and there's no pros only cons about working self employed in a salon it seems
