I have had intimate waxing done at several salons in the north east england and each time the experience has been different. I have been told that the scrotum is a no go area because it is a classed as a gland and it is difficult to get insurance cover for this. is this true? Each time I ask for a Brazilian and for everything off, but never get the same thing twice. Last time the therapist did part of the scrotum but left the penis shaft and then had me on all fours and gave me the most thorough waxing of the anal area I have ever had! I have also had Brazilians which turn out to be nothing more than glorified Bikini waxes. Also what standards of hygiene should I expect as this also differs greatly?

For starters, it's perfectly safe to wax the scrotum if the correct technique is used.

The general consensus is that hot wax is far preferable for intimate waxing than strip wax - and the most respected male waxing trainers in the country (Kim Lawless - The Wax Queen and Andy Rouillard - Male Waxing Training) both teach male intimate waxing using hot wax, as does Lori Nestore (the US Wax Queen). Generally, hot wax will give you a much more comfortable intimate waxing experience as well as causing a lot less trauma to the skin.

Obviously, hygiene standards should be particularly impeccable for any form of intimate waxing; you should expect the skin to be pre-cleaned at the start of the treatment (some therapists will provide you with a "wet wipe" so you can clean the area yourself if you prefer), it's also normal for the therapist to wear gloves, and strict hygiene procedures should be adhered to (e.g. no "double-dipping" of spatulas).

In order to get the skin suitably taut for waxing (particularly the scrotum), your therapist may ask you to hold your scrotum or penis with your fingers, e.g. pulling your penis to one side or the other so they can wax the appropriate area.

In answer to the insurance question, that would depend on things like whether the training course in male waxing that your therapist took is accredited - I know that Andy Rouillard's courses are HABIA accredited, for example. I certainly wouldn't risk getting an intimate wax off a therapist who hadn't received the appropriate training though!

I would always ask the client exactly how much hair they want to be removed before I start the treatment.

I agree with Ruth hygiene is very important with all treatments especially waxing. I leave wipes for my client to cleanse with and a disposable towel to cover themselves with. I then cleanse the area, wear gloves for the treatment and never re-dip my spatulas.

Well said about asking the client about how much hair they want removing - that is essential! Many waxers also have different pricing depending on how much comes off, often with exotic sounding names, e.g. an "Australian" is "all off down under", for example...

Thanks for the advice from everyone. So far I have only experienced strip wax, which was bearable (usually) , so I will seek out a salon which uses hot wax next time. As for hygiene, some therapists have used gloves and others have not and I think there have been quite a few "double dippers" too. Up here in the North east things are not so enlightened and my requests for a Brazilian have often been met with smirking and sniggering or looks of disgust. However there have been a few very helpful salons who have realy gone out of their way to help me. I would say that more than 95% of salons around here do not do male intimate waxing.

My goodness, you must seriously have balls to cope with strip wax :green:

Anyway, if it's a help, there's a salon in Durham specialising in male grooming that came up on Andy's site that offers male intimate waxing using hot wax by a therapist who is qualified to the latest Habia standards, and they charge £40 for a "BSC" which certainly sounds reasonable for someone with the proper training using hot wax... Male Waxing - Intimate Male Waxing - Back Sack and Crack Waxing - Trampas - Durham - North East - hope that helps :)

That's everywhere, not just the NE. I guess a lot of therapists just don't fancy working on naked people... that's fine, it's their prerogative. And great for those of us who do do it!

When making enquiries, other than asking if the salon offers it, ask if they have had formal training, if they are insured for the treatment, if they use hard wax and if they wear gloves. I would also keep an eye on them for double dipping. It doesn't bother me for leg waxing and so forth but it's not right for intimate areas, mainly due to the possibility of blood spotting, but it's also not a nice thought iykwim :green:

Your experience is no different from with the female Brazilian in that a lot of therapists either don't know how to do one properly, or they simply don't want to do extreme waxing. It has nothing to do with insurance.

I wax men all day and I remove every hair from the butt crack, buttocks, scrotum, penis and as much or as little as they'd like removed from the pubic triangle.

Hygiene is the same for all waxing. No double dipping though, which is when you dip the spatula into the wax, apply the wax to the skin, then use the same spatula to apply more wax. It's best to use a new spatula for each dip of wax on extreme waxing.

Email me and I'll see if I've trained a waxer in your area. xx

and do male waxing, but find getting on a intamate waxing course is a nightmare, taking the time away from work and vice versa for the trainer... i do take everything away apart from the scrorum at the moment.... AHERM kim lol its little ole me again lol xx PS i use Harley hot and warm wax .

My husband just uses hair removal cream, less painful unless he keeps it on too long and burns his skin, he then walks around a little dodgy for an hour or so

In my book......when you're doing Intimate Waxing on males or females.....you should be removing everything apart from their tonsils. Don't settle for second best! x

I'm confused now, is there different sorts of training for male intimate waxing? I thought if you did a male intimate waxing course that it should cover everything, all parts of 'bits down there'

No. Male intimate waxing training covers the entire area. Spoilt hasn't done the training yet, that's why she's not doing the sac. Well, I don't want to speak for her, but I imagine that's the case from what's been said.

I guess if you're trained in female intimate there's not much difference between waxing a male butt crack to a female one  except generally (not always!) males are hairier.

Thank you Zoe, you always take the time to explain things and never get fed up of the same old questions.:)

I can vouch that this is an excellent male salon. It is in a lovely part of Durham, near the cathedral. I know this because it has a sister salon for ladies (and gents) next door to it that offers Beauty, Holistic, Aesthetics and Hair Styling.
Both are owned by the same company and always look very luxurious and welcoming :)
