split nails,what to recommend?

A friend of mine keeps splitting her nails from the free edge to the nail bed or across but really low down.I told her to keep her nails quite short and to use a strengthening nail polish, she is adamant that she wants gels! What do you recommend.
Any feedback would be great.:|

the only way to stop her doing this to her natural nails are as you suggested, keep them much shorter or have them coated with gel, l+p or fibreglass; all will help but I think she needs to take the length down too.
