Thinning the free edge question

Hopefully this isn't a naive question but my training never addressed this...
You can thin the extension free edge to make it easier for client to pick things up etc etc but, when the nail grows with the extension and then becomes an overlay... can you still file underneath, on the now natural nail to thin the free edge?

No, only ever file the top of the enhancement (the overlay product) never the natural nail. If you file off the natural nail from underneath you are removing some of the structure. Plus it's no longer an 'overlay' if there is no natural nail.
