If you send an employee on a course that's far away, would you pay for their travel and/or accommodation or would you expect them to pay for it?

Also, if the course is on a day that they are normally working, would you still pay them a wage for that day?

If they're employed, you should cover the costs of them having to travel and any subsistence and accommodation costs if the course is longer than a day or too far to return within one day.

Also, as they are attending for work related training, then you are required to pay them their normal hourly rate. This applies even if the training takes place on a day that they don't normally work.

However, you can have a contract drawn up that requires the staff member to reimburse some of the training costs (not travel or subsistence) if they leave your employment within a specified period after the event. It needs to be deemed reasonable (in legal terms) regarding the amount to repay and the minimum employment period so definitely seek proper legal advice beforehand.

Ah great that makes it a bit clearer, thank you!
