    Self employed and employed

Carron, really feel for you. The rules are that more than 50% of your income for the tax year ending 6 April 2019 need to have come from self employed. So I think your accountant is saying that wasn’t the case so you’re not eligible for the self employment coronavirus support. You should...

Coronavirus interruption loan scheme (CBILS) isn’t working. New measures announced

The coronavirus interruption loan scheme (CBILS) isn’t working as planned. So Rishi Sunak has made amendments to the scheme, announcing them yesterday, 3rd April. If you have applied unsuccessfully, go back to the bank again. But wait a few days, as you’ll see below. Only around £90m of...

@IndigoBlue Hi, sorry for the delay in replying. HMRC has said not to claim or contact them about self employment grants as they will be calculating which self employed people will get a grant. And yes, I would apply for UC or anything you can.

They can. However they can’t do anything on their business if they do. So they couldn’t run their payroll for example or any undertake any admin on it. Effectively your business is dormant. And if you did, you’d also need to look at what salary you could claim on. If you’ve been taking a...

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll make that more clear. Trying to simplify it vs enough detail was quite hard.

    Universal Credit

Employed means you are an employee of someone else - that you are are a payroll. Self employed is a bit of a misnomer as you are not employed, you are not on a payroll system but instead actually a sole trader.

How to keep staff occupied during Coronavirus shut down

Quick note that if you have furloughed your staff they cannot be doing any work for you as this may mean you can’t claim the 80% grant. Of course, if they want to be doing training in their own time etc that’s great - you can suggest it ;-)

    Confused about grants and pay

I would guess yes but we’re still awaiting the detail.

    Confused about grants and pay

If you close, make sure you make her ‘furloughed’ (just tell her she is). The mechanism for getting the 80% from the govt is yet to be published. We await. So if you can pay her, you should. You donot have to pay her the 20%. That’s your personal decision.

    Chair renters work hours

Thanks @AcidPerm. I don't think Section 2 you quoted from the HMRC/NHBF guidelines is as literal as that. The salon is offering to 'rent' a space or chair within its amenities during the times that the salon is open. As long as there is a contract in place, the 2 businesses are entering an...
