    training advice pls

I am a salon owner and I can't tell you the nightmare I've had with 'qualified' staff. I am becomming increasingly concerned about the colleges urgency to whizz young girls through their modules and help them get it all looking good on their CV's. I interview by asking the girls to bring a model...

Why didn't people show up to my open day?

Hi. I get all the young girls in our area to pay a £5 booking fee. If they phone for an appointment I tell them I will pencil them in and they have 3 days to come in with their deposit. We have lots of young girls coming in my salon but most of them don't care that they miss an appointment which...

How much do you charge for a full set of nail extensions & why?

We charge £40 for a full set of acrylic sculpts. Very few clients pay this as we encourage them to have glitter acrylics/ embedded nail art/ FINISH gel overlay which all adds up. £24 for refills and £29 backfills. Hope this helps. By the way we are the most expensive in our area, but our...

Hi. Check out the new INDIA range from OPI. They're gorgeous - lots of jewel colours. My clients EVERY summer want hot pinks. They're a winner every time x

What is your favourite pedicure range and why..

Hi. We use ESSIE in my salon which my clients love. The products are rich and indulgent but for me thats only half the story. I'd rather someone know how to use a cuticle knife, nippers, callous remover etc and be confident with her tools than what lotions and potions she's using. I do love...

What were you in a previous life?

I feel blessed! Went to Beauty College straight from school (19 years ago I might add!)and have been doing nails and beauty ever since. I still can't believe I get paid to do this job. I love it!!! By the way a recent poll stated that the happiest workers in the world worked in the beauty...

Is this too much for renting a room?

I think this sounds like a good opportunity. I think you should commit to 2 days to build up your clients. 1 full set will pay your rent. There are so many ways to market yourself so this should be a really exciting time for you. A high street salon (with a good reputation?) is a brilliant...

    French Polish!

Hi. Pull the skin down from the sidewalls whilst holding their finger. I apply white french tip polish on a naked nail then dip my acrylic brush (an old one) into acetone and tidy up the smile line from 'inside'. A coat of matte pink base coat over the top and finish with top coat. You can...

I keep on rambling on on here about Businesslink! They really are amazing and will put you in touch with all the relevant people. Its all government funded so theres no charge. Google for their website (I don't know how to add links!) but phone them for a copy of their book, its really...

I've been offered a space in a salon - what do I need to know?

I do a 50/50 split with my girls. I do all the advertising and promotions, buy products etc. They just pay their tax and NI out of their money. Find out if the salon will be advertising for you. You need EVERYONE to know you're there, not just the hair clients. Good luck X:)

Starting a beauty business at home

I've worked from home for years and open my first salon in a months time. You definately need to google search Businesslink. If you manage to get their phone number contact them and they'll send you a book on starting your own business and you'll get access to your own mentor who will help you...

    body treatments

You might be better sticking with the body brushing and moisturising as a total treatment. Scrubs can be messy if you haven't got shower facilities. I don't know anywhere that does training in body brushing so I haven't been much use to you have I?! I go for elemis treatments quite often and...

can i do my work experience in a home based salon?

I run a homebased salon and am always approached by the local college re work placement. I always have to decline, firstly because I do everything in 1 room and I'm on a really tight schedule so I wouldn't have the time to give you. Is there any particular reason you want to do homebased work...

    Wax Machine

OOh I'm so glad that theres someone as weird as me! I turn up the heat, put surgical spirit in the empty waxer and wipe out with couch roll. Smells divine! I'm a bit messy on the outside of my waxer and made the fatal mistake of once trying to wipe it down with acetone! This resulted in melted...

    Really shiny nails!!!!!!!

I think it has got be the most closely guarded secret in the world!!! Surely there must be some governing body that can check which products they are using. They must be answerable to someone if the dreaded MMA is banned???
