Was offered £5 but am such a softie I couldnt take it..xx

I guess I fall into the "special" category.
My clients usually tip me a minimum of 5$ CDN and sometimes over that.
It's very rare that I get less than 5$. And it has happened on two rare occasions that I recieved over 10$ in tips.

Those are pretty awesome tips in my neck of the woods. Can't really compare pounds to dollars and all that, but out here in Montreal, those are darn tooting good:lol:

My clients usualy tip me between $10 and $20 CAN.I have a client that every time pull out $100 bill and says "Keep the change dear"At Christmas I will get gift certificates for $50 or $100 ,boxes of chocs, jewelry, decorative scented candles and so on.

I get the odd £2-£3 here and there and they all go in my daughters money box. She now has £50 in there.

nobody like bigheads

Whoever gave me this negative rep regarding my reply to this thread, if you have something negative to say, at least have the courtesy and courage to leave your name.

"I" did not choose the wording of this poll. If I fell into that category, that is no fault of my own.
I actually found it amusing. Particularly since I'm 'sort-of' new to the industry in a roundabout way and I was rather 'chuffed' as you all say in the UK to see that I was doing so well in the tip department.

I KNOW that I have TONNES to learn. If you really knew me and really read what I have to say in other threads, you would KNOW that I do NOT have a big head regarding my skills. You could NOT be further from the truth.
This was rude of you.

btw, your grammar is incorrect. It's "Nobody likeS bigheads".
I'm going to assume that either A) you have no sense of humour regarding my post (which, it was all in gest when I made that comment) or B) you're jealous.
Or both.

Whatever

i was recently given a 25.00 doolar (usd) tip

i dont know y, but since i have been working in the salon, which is also a hairdresser i have'nt had 1 tip, yes thats right, not 1. All the ladies tip the hairdressers like they think its customary to, but when they come to me, all i get is a thank you!!! Not that i expect alot, just a little bit of appreciation. The hairdressers just can't understand y i don't, and neither can i, as most of my customers do come back for more. Maybe its cause i've only been working there for 4 months and it could be that it takes a while to build this kind of relationship, whatever it is, theres no tips going on where i am!!

Regards Kerri x

Same here hun!! took a while before they started tipping me too(not that i expect it but it would be nice lol)You will find its usually the ones who are loaded that dont tip-dont know why.........

when I was in the States my clients tipped me very well :) And at holiday times there were really very generous....I miss them all  ......since I've been here in Canada I'm working on getting clientel back up .....had to start new again........but have found that (God bless them )they are not as generous....(but I come from Vegas too).... the land of the tip!....I don't know how they are at Christmas ...this will be my first one with clientel.....could just be me ...but have notice in all aspects bars, resturants, spa's ...that tipping usually is not a big practice here .

To edit: I do not expect a tip but when one is given I appreciate it... as that I know they are pleased with my work....

I used to work in a casino...some woman, whom i never met before told me to go in the side pocket of her purse and take my tip because her nails were wet...there was a 100 dollar bill..i asked if she needed change ...she said it was all mine! why did i ever leave that job?? lol

Where are you getting this? Who said that Americans "EXPECT" tips? I don't know anyone who adds a tip to the final bill, at least not for nails. Maybe for restaurants when they get large groups of people....but for nails? Who does this? I think everyone's tips are given because they have done a good job. And there are alot of nail techs that do a great job...In America and everywhere else! My clients certainly don't feel that "they have to" tip.

All the Americans I know, do. As do we Canadians. That's why waitresses and bartenders and other similar jobs have lower 'minimum wages' declared by law as they usually make up the bulk of their salary in tips, and not their hourly wage.
When I dont' get a tip, I'm insulted.

In fact, I bet if you search on google (and I know that I have, and I saw it), you'll find several sites - AMERICAN SITES - that indicate/suggest/stipulate what is acceptable tipping, what is 'cheap a**" and what is overkill. They will also tell you who you should be tipping. Tipping is an act of courtesy YES, but in the US & CDA, it also makes up for the bulk of some people's salaries. How would you like to earn only 4.50$ per hour and not make tips? (that's what the minimum wage is here for waitresses vs the 7.85 for everyone else). You can bet your heiney I wont work for such a piddly salary if there's no tips. HECK NO.

Also, there are bigger name salons in the US and Canada that automatically add the tip to the final bill. They DO exist. Go on Beautytech.com.. I remember distinctly a tech on that site that said 15-20% was added to the bill to tip the staff AUTOMATICALLY. I remember so well because when she was at her old salon, she had griped about some of the 'cheap' clients and how it was nice to know she'd be appreciated every time and never break her back putting out her 500% effort and not get a recognized for it.

so, yes, tipping is the norm and is expected in the US and in Cda.

  I`ve only done about 6 sets of nails on paying clients as i`ve only been qualified 5 wks and only been working for 1 wk but my third client tipped me a fiver and i must say this did loads for my confidence, the money didnt matter that much it was just so nice to know that she was happy with the set i had done, other clients have tipped between £1.00 and £3.00. And i did have one client come back who wasnt happy with what i did but i tried my best to correct the problem and she seemed happier?

£5 is the most i have ever got and i get the odd £1 plus. I did get some fudge and a lovely box of almonds covered in milk chocolate and chillies, yummy! I never expect anything and am always really touched when anybody does anything kind for me.

Teri x:)

Aussies are not known to be great tippers.. but I get more enjoyment from seeing there faces after a good session anyway! As I am mostly mobile if i can get a decent coffee and some good conversation thats thanks enough for me! :)

I have loved reading all your stories and thought I would share mine.

About 2 years ago I worked in a Nail Bar in Princess Square in Glasgow when a gentel man came over and asked my if I had a mobile phone charge.

The gent looked as though he had just come from a Funeral and quite up set so I said lets see what we have here all the girls produce thier chargers and yeh one worked.

So I then asked the gent were are you going he said up stairs for dinner so he left the phone with me and came back a few hrs later and tried to give me money. My being a nice girl refused and said I only charged the phone dont worry about it so as he left he through the money under my desk and said treat the girls to a drink on me then disappeard.

When I got the money from under the desk he had left £100 yes that is not a typing mistake £100 and i didnt even do a set of nails.

So the moral of this story is be nice to everyone and then one day someone will be really nice to you.

Lv ya all

My biggest tip from a client was $25 for a $25 service. It was at Christmas time and I was QUITE taken aback by it. It was VERY much appreciated.

A couple weeks ago, my best friend gave me a $35 tip for a $35 service. Great friend, huh? She rocks! :)
