Hi All

I apologise in advance for what might be 2 very dumb questions

1. I did a 2 day nail course at the weekend (just a taster - I am looking at CND) and now have a lovely set of nails that I want to hopefully keep. My first question - when applying the polish (in the manicure teaching bit) and L&P they taught us to not go all the way to the cuticle but to leave a tiny gap. Now this is really quite noticable to me on my own nails (i have natural tips with a kinda nude polish on, there is also this gap with the polish) most peeps probably wouldn't notice unless I litterally stuck my fingers in their face to be fair, but looking at all your wonderful photos on the galleries here, there is no noticable gap by the cuticle. So is this tech incorrect/unusual?

2. Second question, the aforementioned nails have gel over the polish (which looks very pretty) but I can see this causing me a problem when it comes to rebalancing (which at the rate my nail nails will probably be fairly soon) as I can't get the polish off (with non acetone) from underneath the gel can I? I have experimentally began to put another coat of polish on over the top (thinking to rebalance then just polish over the lot) but the colour really isn't very nice when it's 2 coats. Now I'm told that the gel is a medium gel which is removable with acetone (?) so am I just going to have to be very careful with the acetone when it comes to my rebalance?

Sorry for the waffle and I hope it makes sense?

Thank you

Hey There,

You must leave a gap between the acrylic and the cuticle. It will cause lifting if your acrylic touches the cuticle. If you blend really well you will not see 'the gap'. You must concentrate on blending at the cuticle and make sure there is no 'bump' where the acrylic meets your natural nail (at the cuticle end), if it is not an absolutely smooth transition you will get lifting also.

About the gel/polish- I would never use acetone to remove that as you will affect your acrylic under the gel. Gel is not very thick, and you have to file the acrylic down at a refill anyway so i would just do that and keep going until all colour is gone. Sometimes my clients have coloured gel ontop of their acrylics (red, whatever), and I just have to do it, it can take longer but if your client is happy- thats all that matters hey? AND not many people have colour anymore, most clients have french/natural so you don't have to worry about it too much.

I hope I answered your questions correctly and I'm not waffling on and on about something irrelevant... Anyway, hope i could be of help..

Keep smiling!!

Thanks Corrine, yes you have answered the questions for me.

So when my rebalance is due, I file off the gel top coat and the polish, do the infill, file (very carefully LOL) next to the cuticle to blend in the new acrylic (so not to notice the gap) file/buff as smooth as I can and finish the lot off with polish (I really love the colour).

I do normally wear my own nails naturally long (and have enhancements for special occasions) so I hope that if I keep on top of the maintenence I can grow these out and end up with NNO.

Thanks for your help.

don't forget the prep, but it seems right.

blend the new product on the old one, and on the natural nail to have no bump. and polish is fine, and if you want your polish to last longer, a layer of finishing gel will be fine (applied when the polish is dry of course)

Hiya,

Yes that's correct, make sure you prep thoroughly so your natural nail (at cuticle end) has no shine to it. And use your scrubfresh & primer before acrylic application. I don't know what NNO is, i've never heard that before but i think you are saying if you can keep it up you can grow so your own natural nail is underneath the acrylic instead of a tip...?

No worries at all, take care, if u need any advice let me know :green:

NNO = Natural nail overlay ;)
