Im 24 years old currently a full time hairdresser working in a salon for the past 4 years & I'm wanting to go back to college for further education.
My problem is I'm the main stylist at the salon cover all duties as if i had a manger role . Recently my boss took on a new full time stylist which was great easing some of the pressure off me. As one of the part time stylist went on maternity and wont be back til January.
Ive seen a course in Hairdressing costing £1500 plus £50 material fees & that requires 3 days a week being at the college, which would take a huge amount of time and pay away from me
Im struggling on what to do. I really want to go college and study to better my self but if i go now i fear the drop in my pay would effect my financial duties i.e car, rent, travel, food etc. i care about the salon and dont want my boss thinking I'm leaving them in a mess

Any suggestions on what i could do?

Do what is right for you, not anybody else. Furthering your education is a great idea. Mainly, if you can afford to go part time, and study also, then do it. Most college courses are 2-3 days a week.

This course is only full time, because I'm full time i wont be accepted for any financial help. Which i understand. But if i was to go full time at college i would be classed as part at work 16 hours.

Oh sorry, I thought you meant college. Have you done your level 3? You would get college bursary and full funding. I've not long finished my level 3. If your workplace would allow it then great. Ice struggled to find Full Time work after college. So maybe an agreement with your work would be ideal.

Yeah im level 3 qualified I've found a level 2 course specialising in afro caribbean hair i want to apply for just my choice on what to do for my job as i have bills to pay lol

Maybe start a special fund , set aside a certain amount daily/weekly to help pay your costs, set a goal to do school by a certain date 😃
Always remember , take care of yourself first, if you don't take care of you, there is nothing to give to somebody else.
Btw there are several companies that offer scholarships, doesn't go off income ☺️ Also if your important to your salon, talk to your owner and see if they can contribute to your college find with a contract with you to stay at your workplace for a certain time :)
Patience life takes planning sometimes 😘

Hope this helps☺️

Sally's , Pepsi, coca cola , Walmart, are a few , just do a search online for local scholarships, not to mention if you wear glasses or have asthma or dress up furry, scholarships like these are applied for in a calendar year, submits in Jan.
Again patience can be your friend and fix all your worries😃
Best of luck to you

Thank you both for the great advice! 😊

Sounds like you &/or your boss should "head hunt" another stylist you could train b4 you drop your hours. Also, make a cycle or two through your regular clients telling them of your new exciting change. Just try to have your days off school or 1 long day/week like 9am-7-9pm to keep in the game. You could also see if the owner is willing to let you have after hours after school is done like 6pm-9pm a few days a week. I did this evening switch when schooling & it worked well after pre warning my clients, there was no problem & little income lost.

That was my next thought. My mum wants me to wait a year so the Salon would be in a better situation when i drop my hours which is the right thing to do but only at the salons benefit. From last year I've been wanting to attend college but something has always come up at work that stopped me from doing so.

You just need to go for it and think about yourself, I think you will find your salon would if it were the other way round.
Can you take on some mobile clients to top up your earnings?
As you said you've been wanting to do it for ages, if you wait for all of the circumstances to be right before you make the move you will be waiting forever because there will always be something that's not right.
Just tell them you're doing it and they will work something out. People leave jobs and cut their hours all the time for personal reasons and businesses just deal with these issues because they have to. Good luck. Xx
