Hello everyone

I wanted to ask all you nail geeks a question about Acrylic nails?

I am a holistic and beauty therapist renting above a hairdresses and wanted to go to college and do Acrylic Nails.

What I want to ask you all is is difficult to learn and pick up?

I really want to give it a go so I can add it onto my manicures that I offer in the salon.

all i would say flower - is if you want to lean nails - go to a reputable company - dont go with these 3 day courses (they a waste of time - imo) when you go with a reputable company you WILL learn what you need to - but - you have to practice -

Every beauty therapist I have ever spoken to about this subject has told me that applying artificial nail enhancements is the most difficult treatment they have ever had to learn to perform ... it is artwork and you either have it or you haven't. Often if you have to ask ... it means you have doubts ,,, if you have doubts then maybe it is not for you.

IMO It is difficult to learn.. even with the best training available it is still going to take a lot of practice and you should seek the best training you possibly can.
There are so many factors that can effect the outcome of a set of nails and you need to practice till you have every one of them down pat to create beautiful nails. Having said that there seem to be people who have the nack straight up and pick it up very easily (that's not me I have the passion but not the talent. )
It takes a lot of dedication IMO
Good Luck

Hi...

Learning acrylic nails is exciting & fun.! however, it is not as easy as it may look...it's much harder to pick up. but if you really really want to learn you can but only with plenty of practice..!!!

Before i carry on, i just want to say all these short & fast track nail courses are a complete wast of money & time.!!! Can you really honesly learn & become a really good nail tech within 2/3 or even on a 5 day nail course.??! & most importantly do you think your potential clients would trust you??? No They Wouldn't.!!

A question for everyone..who is thinking about these short/fast track nail courses. Would you trust & put your faith into a person who just learnt to become a hairdresser in 5 days???! I Think Not..!! Their is no difference whether you are a hairdresser or a nail tech, because they are both a skilled profession which takes time to master.

I feel so angry..!!! with people who go on these short course because they are CHEAP! & you get what you pay for..!!! & inturn your clients will get what they have paid for. & believe me when i say this you will loose your client base dam quick.!!!!

I have been a nail tech for 3 yrs now, & spend my time working Freelance as a nail tech & as a trainer. i live in Birmingham but also work in Bournemouth. I have got a salon in B,ham where i spend 3 days per forenight teaching students 'Acrylic Nails & Liquid using the electric-file'. & the rest of the time i'm teaching the same techniques in Bournemouth.

The nail course i offer is designed around your personal life. Also unlike colleges all students will have a minimum of 1 month practical customer experience! prior to qualifying as a nail tech. Quote?! No students may qualify unless they have had 1 month in-salon clients experience. Prior to 1 month clients experience all students will practice on family & friends until they feel totally confident in their technique & within themselves.

When qualifying you just don't get a certificate, you get actual hands-on client experience. I will teach you how to complete a Full-set & In-fills in 1hr, then as you become more experience i will show you how to complete a Full-set & In-fills in 45mins, 35mins, 30mins & even in 25mins.!!! Not bad if you're charging £30 per set & it only takes you 30mins to complete!

I hope the info i have just given helps...& all the best whichever path you're destined to take....

Good Luck....

Hi u,

Wow...i have found another person who agrees that these short/fast track nail courses are such a waste of time & money.! Thank you!!!

Just like Geeg said, you either have it or you don't.

I suspect telling people they will be able to do nails in 3

days(all systems of course) is just as dishonest as those

people who use the geek site to advertise their classes

and who tell their prospective students they will be able to

do Full Sets and Rebalances in 30 minutes!!

I agree Geeg - that as a Beauty Therapist nail enhancements are the hardest thing to learn to do well. However, for me it gave me enough desire to want to make nails one of my main services as it is one of the few areas where you can show any artistic talents you have. You do have to be prepared it is one of the treatments that takes the longest to be confident at doing well but would recommend that if it is something you have a yearning to do then go for it. Nail enhancements are now approximately 50 - 70% of all services I do.

You never know, it might inspire a new passion in you too. x x x

I can't help but think that (a) this is false advertising and (b) you are trying to make a quick buck out of some poor unfortunate person by telling them that they'll be able to produce a set of beautiful enhancements in 25 minutes! I have been doing acrylic enhancements for 2 years and I've never met anybody who could sculpt full sets in 25 minutes (unless they had some fingers missing of course - lol).

Yes it is definitely a skill and you'll pull your hair out at times, BUT, my God it is so addictive and the possibilities are endless. What with glitters, colours, nail art, I suppose you won't know whether you like it unless you try.

I educate, we do 4 day beginners courses that teach you Health and safety nail anatomy, disorders and contra-indications, manicure, tip application and chosen system method of application, maintainence and removal. You can be taught the basics but it takes lots of practice and on going training to become competant. Product training to me is the best as you learn how to use your choesn system to the best of its and your ability especially if that training can be or is part of an NVQ 3 in nail services. Sorry but i feel that people should not be put off these courses, if they choose their system wisely the product training will be the invaluable. As for doing nails in 25 mins, well i have been doing nails for 10 years and can't finish a set in under an hour! QUALITY NOT QUANTITY!

I did my nail course through college. Have a look at your local college and see if they do a night course usually they do one night a week for 36 weeks. I left being able to do the basics but i practice loads at work, the more practice the better you get. good luck! X :)

There is nothing wrong with short courses when that short course is only a part of on going further training. For instance, with CND the foundation training is 5 days, but it is only the beginning and there are no promises that anyone will head out and into the salon the next day and be making money (or doing full sets in 30 minutes ) You will though be able to go out and practise safely on real people and know allot more than on most courses that promise you more.

To complete the CND course completely takes about a year on and off and with time in between to practise. Depends on your dedication and your pocketbook.

I did a 6 day course i thought i would be able to produce a great set of nails when i had finished, how wrong can you be. I did get all the basics from this but its a year later and i am only now happy with my nails. I have had more training and practised so much.
You have to be dedicated and determined to overcome the many problems that come up but if you use this site there's lots of peeps ready to help i wish i had found it sooner. I have still got lots to learn i am always saving for my next training day. x
