There is a new 'cosmoseutical' range of skincare available from South Africa Called NIMUE.

NIMUE is not a pretty cosmetic line but similar in its approach to skincare as Dermalogica (which IMO is the best there is). However NIMUE offers specific treatment for 3 different conditions: ACNE, Vitiligo, and Environmentally damaged skin.

There is a person at the office who suffers from vitiligo and we used this person as a test case and in 6 months, you can hardly tell he has the condition .. amazing.

Why not pm Mrs Geek and she could send you the pack of products to use. It is a simple range to use and not inundated with dozens of products ... there are basically 3-5 things you should regularly use. maybe you could be another test case.

Hiya, thought I'd give you my two pennies worth!

I have suffered acne ever since the age of 12, and I mean REALLY BAD ACNE!!!! I got bullied at school because of it! I have this one photo of me when I was 16 and my face is nearly covered in spots, eurgh, it's horrible! Anyway, I spent many years at the doctors and specialists trying this that and the other, I've tried pills, medicines, creams, lotions, washes, facials anything they'd give me. BUT the good news is that, fingers crossed, it is now under control!

I still have one or two occasionally, but I haven't had more than two on my face in the last twelve months and am hoping it stays that way. I don't know if it'll be the same for you, but this, after years of trial error, is the combination that works for me (and it's not really expensive either):

Quinoderm cream, which I apply twice a day
APS Oxytetracycline Tablets BP 250mg four times a day
Tea Tree & Mint range from The Body Shop (they have foaming facial washes, mattifying moisturising gel, face scrubs and masks and they r really nice)
And I go for a special skin peel four times a year (but this is my choice)

Anyway, some of the things in the other threads were really true aswell:
*Make sure you exfoliate at least once a week to get rid of the build up of oil on your face
*Use a gel moisturiser as normal ones are too oily for your skin
*ALWAYS REMOVE MAKE-UP at the end of the day
*Only wear light foundation as it can clog up your pores and can cause spots

Sorry for the long post, but if it helps you out it was worth it! And I feel a bit of an expert after everything I've tried! LOL! My fingers are crossed for you, I know how horrible it can be.

thanks so much geeg - i'll pm mrs geek now and see if she can help me.

samoyed - it's brill to hear from someone who's solved the 'problem', i've got an appt with my GP on wed, armed with all the info i've been given on this thread! Not sure about giving up the heavy foundation habit though - it's a vicious circle, i know, but to me a good foundation is 'confidence' in a tube!
Just found a great one yesterday as it turns out £25!! from benefit (think it's called a playstick?) v good coverage!

thanks again xx

Forgot to ask - I'm really keen to have a skin peel - but they're so expensive I want to be sure I'm spending money on a treatment that is going to really give results.
Samoyed (and anyone else that either uses or performs any kind of skin resurfacing treatments), how have you found the results? How expensive? How often do you need to go? What are the negatives? and any other info would be great!

Thanks again guys! x

Are the spots on the side that you use a phone on? Phones breed bacteria and this can contribute to spots along the jawline. Also watch out for products that have Sodium Lauryl Sulphate - can make acne worse and is hidden in many products (although the US have removed it from a fair few now) - I've had acne since the mid twenties, and have found that the milder and less complex the product, the better the result - go look at some US site's on beauty ingredients, it will make you think!

hi Laura - just another thought. You said in your post about changing your diet . It might be worth asking your GP to test you for food intolerances. I've always rolled my eyes heavenwards when people mentioned food intolerances until I was diagnosed with coeliac disease earlier this year. (That'll teach me to be more sympathetic!!) I only realised after i read your post that I haven't been bothered by only occasional but painful spots at all since I was forced to cut out gluten.

Hi, my bro is 26 and used to suffer from acne really bad. He tried every sort of cream/medication ect, and nothing helped him. Until i read about a product i retial at my salon called 'Tend skin'. You'll probably (as myself) know about it, as an excellent product on sale for ingrowing hairs and razor bumps. I read in an article that it can also help with acne, coldsores and many other common problems. My bro has been using it for jus over the pass year, an reary has a spot in sight! If you want any more info, or the company's details get back 2 me, an i'll gladly pass it on to you! (also the sunbed helps to dry out spots).
All the best!

Hi

DERMALOGICA!! Is an excellent range. I would go for a consultation with your nearest salon and get some samples. The first thing you need to think about is your skins natural barrier may be stripped off with the products you are using so your therapist may want to start you off on the ultra calming range to repair your skins natural barrier and soothe and calm your skin. Are you a stressfull/nervous worrier kind of person?? this can sometimes make your acne worse. When your skins barrier is repaired you will find your skin will start to settle down and you can start to add some of the acne treatment products to your range. Like the special clearing booster (which is an excellent spot cream) or the medicated clearing gel.
Do not be tempted to strip your skin in the hope that drying it out will help to clear your spots up it will have the reverse affect, by sripping the skin of its natural barrier and infaming your skin (redness).

Hello Laura

This is what we used at beauty school, you use a cleanser for oily skin, exfoliate and then apply a mask with fullers earth and witch hazel mixed together leave it on for 10-15mins then wash away tone off with the witch hazel and apply a moisturiser suitable for oily skin. Think about your diet as well, find foods with vitamin C,E, antioxdiants and Zinc, green vegetables. Aromatherapy is also good such oils as
lemon, lemongrass, peppermint, petigrain, tea tree, rosemary, rose and many more, these are just examples. Carrier oil suitable would be either Almond oil which is full of vitamins for the skin, or wheatgerm which is good for scarring.

I've carried out this treatment on a client and to begin with the spots do come out more, but after a few treatments results were noticed and the problem started to clear. Also think about drinking water to clear the toxins out of your system.

You can get all of these ingredients from the trade shop and there sold at a good price, so you don't end up spending loads, all the products come in salon size so you'll be saving at the end. If you want good quality aromatherapy oil you could buy from Eve Taylor or go to your local health shop, they can advise on this sort of problem.

Dawn

Hi, It's just occurred to me that many of you are beauty therapist and make-up artists, so I thought I'd pick your brains for any tried and tested tips for treating and / or covering up zits?!:o :o

I'm not talking the odd one, I have a number or large painful spots around my jawline, lower cheeks and neck, and at 25yrs old, it's JUST NOT ON!:irked:

I've been to the doc's millions of times, also a dermatologist and acupuncturist (the most successful solution, but i just can't afford it now).

So I wondered if you guys are aware of any clients who've had similar probs and manage to treat / cover it up successfully?

I'll try (pretty much!) anything!
Thank-you
x

P.S. sorry to bring this minging subject up as you're prob eating your brekkie, but it's just so depressing to look like a teenager still (with none of the skinny legs / flat tummy / perky boobs that normally goes with being a teenager!)

Hiya,

I'm a newbie on here but when i read this it really struck a chord.
I have had the same problem and I'm 28, I tried all sorts. I am now on a new pill on the market called Yasmin. It's expensive so they don't like to prescribe it, however I stamped my feet and got what I wanted in the end. It claims to help with spots, fluid retention and PMS symptoms. I would recommend you ask your doc about this. It has started to improve the quality of my skin already. I know everyone's hormone levels and tolerances are different, however I have had tremendous probs with hormone levels in the past, trying to get pregnant etc and this has really helped with the moods, skin and everything.
Hope this infois of some use to you!
I realise I'm joining the discussion a bit late but I have been on Yasmin for my skin for over two years now and it has worked like a charm!

I had suffered with the dreaded painful red lumps for about 2.5 years trying every over the counter spot "remedy" and Minocin from my GP - all were pants. At one point I had 21 lumps on my forehead alone and felt like a freak - confidence shattered and I couldn't look anyone in the eye. I had never had problem skin before so getting it in my thirties was a bit of a shock.

I asked my doctor about Yasmin after reading about it in a magazine. When I started on it I also did a Boots 5 day detox (as lumps on the jaw line can also be due to liver toxicity apparently) and had a couple of Decleor facials. I now won't use anything but Decleor. I also use an oil free Dior foundation which is pricey but I justify it by the fact that I wouldn't think twice about spending £20 on a top I might wear once or twice but I wear the foundation every day and it lasts me 6 months. The Decleor is expensive too but I noticed an improvement in my skin almost immediately. I would've spent thousands to get rid of those spots!

These days I get humpy when I've got one spot! My acne is but a distant memory and it will be for you too so don't lose heart. The other side effect I've noticed with Yasmin is my PMT has disappeared and I don't get nearly as bloated.

Good luck - I hope I've helped a little.

thank-you all again for the helpful advice.

went to my GP today - she didn't seem to think it was too serious-a-condition, granted, but this meant she wanted me out of her office asap, so i got my yasmin!
Fingers x'd it works as well as it has for some of you guys, not least because i'm at 'that time' and i have grown about 5 extra painful lumps :o(

thank-you sooooo much for taking the time to add every singe little bit of advice

xx

Sooooooo pleased that you have got your Yasmin.
Well done that girl!
Good luck with it, feel free to PM me if you have any questions about it.
Take Care

my husband used to have terrible skin someone recommended TEA TREE. Thas was 6 years ago.
He uses it every day, just like a moisturiser and not a spot in sight.

I am addicted to the stuff now use it for everything excellent for sunburn.

We use the Australian Body Care range from superdrug. About £6 ish. Use it every day.

Hope that helps!

Hello Bud, just thought I'd see how you are getting on now, after using the Yasmin tablets? I was thinking of asking to try these out next, as I've been on mine now for ages and I still get a couple constantly. If these get rid altogether I'd be well chuffed!

And Minkus, I wouldn't have thought that tea tree would be good for sunburn, as it dries out the skin (this is why people with oily skin use it) and can be quite harsh on dry skin. What type of tea tree oil do you use for the sunburn?

Hi
after reading about your problem and reading all the replies I decided to tell you what worked for me. I by no means had a major acne problem but none the less over the years (I'm 43 now) I've suffered with spots on my face. No! they weren't just spots they were sores!! Sometimes the same spot could stay on my face for months, mind you like yourself I wouldn't leave them alone! People would say to me they won't go away if you don't stop picking them, but what these people don't understand is that there is something inside these sores that you have to get out or IT JUST WILL NOT GO AWAY! At times it has been very very hard to get this out and I've even taken drastic measures on occassions to achieve this, like poking about with a pin. Luckily I haven't caused any scarring but once this substance is removed then the spot seems to almost clear up immediately!! I too have been through so much medication over the years that I gave up. I tried all the tetracylines there were going and Dianette. Oxytetracyline worked for a while but your system gets used to all these in time. I wasn't happy taking Dianette cos I read an article where a girl died from taking this. I also went to the hospital dermatologist who prescribed Roacutane. Before you could start taking this you had to have a blood test for cholesterol and then this had to be monitored constantly. With all the side effects that were given to me I was scared off this and decided not to proceed down this road. Now I was not covered in spots but I always had at least one or two sores on my face that could hang around for months and would be very nasty looking. I don't know what made me think to do this but I went and bought the Olay range of cleanser, toner and moisturiser. Now this is my routine....If I've had makeup on during the day I use all three in the evening and don't wash with soap and water. In the mornings I wash my face with JOHNSONS MOISTURISING SHOWER GEL (a tiny drop) then just use the moisturiser but you can use the toner as well if you want. You have to be very strict with yourself and take your makeup off every evening even if you don't feel like it. I can HONESTLY say since doing this routine my face has cleared up TOTALLY and I don't have any spots on my face now. I may have got the ODD ONE now and then but not very often. The good thing is that Olay is not very expensive so you could try it at low cost to see if it works for you but you should give it a few months to see if it does. Just thought I'd share this with you cos I used to be at the end of my tether with it!! Good luck and I hope it gets better for you soon
Donna
