Advantages of BIAB?

Check with your insurance but I think you need a Gel Polish qualification to offer gel polish these days. You used to be covered if you'd been trained in Gel but I think some have changed their requirements

Yeah my insurance specifies gel polish qualified, which I also have as well as hard gel.

I do wonder though, which category the “build-a-nail type gels” would sit under...

I’ve seen they offer promotional advice and advertising when you complete one of their conversion courses, would be useful for some but me personally aren’t in a position to take on many new clients so that aspect wouldn’t be any use- to me anyway.

im not trained in hard gel im more of an acrylic gal but its sooooooo easy to use, ive currently got halo easi build on my nails and im in love with it x
Can I ask how strong easi build is Compared to acrylic?

Ooops my mind wasn't with it! I was looking at jan thinking it was this years!

I have been using BIAB instead of "traditional" hard gel since October 2017. I was finding that after 2 or 3 infills the hard gel was becoming quite brittle and despite careful prep and application, there was usually some Lifting. Removing hard gel is a real pain and I hadn't been overly impressed with the soakable hard gel I tried. I had been reading all about how wonderful BIAB was for some time so I decided to give it a try, although I was a bit concerned that they no longer sold a specific lamp to cure it.

I tried it out on myself and my friends, family and regular clients that were up for it and we were all really, really impressed!

The consistency is more like a very thick gel polish than traditional hard gel so it's worth flash curing 1 or 2 nails at a time to stop it sliding into the sidewalls, but you soon get used to it. I love using the various nude shades as they make a lovely base for colours (they don't detract from any of the colours either) and they can be used on their own, but the really good part is when you're infilling you can clearly see when you have removed the gel polish, which isn't so easy with a clear product.

BIAB is a dream to file yet it is so strong and it doesn't get brittle with age and Lifting is very rare, so long as your prep is good. It lasts so well and the majority of my clients only come back because of regrowth, bit because they've chipped or lifted. The other good point is that it can be soaked off in acetone, although I rarely need to do this as you can just infill over and over again as long as you debulk and rebalance.

I use it as an overlay over natural nails to give extra strength and also over tips for extensions. You can also sculpt with it. TGB say it's good for medium length extensions. I think if you want to do stiletto style tips or really long their Gel Pot would be more suitable.

TGB brought out their own lamp a few months ago. It has a very useful setting that cures slowly to start with which really helps to eliminate the heat spike that is common with BIAB.

I think it does live up to all the hype!

Can I ask how you debulk and rebalance - do you use an e-file or can this be done with a file if so what grit?

Thanks, x

Unfortunately due to reading many reports of clients developing onycholysis using TGB base coats (mainly BIAB!) and various other issues, I lost confidence in the brand, so no longer use it, or would feel happy to recommend it.

Soak off builders are easier to file though, so hand filing or a fine-medium grit e-file bit will both work well for debulking/rebalancing x

I’m a newly qualified tech and thought I had done enough research and decided on The Gel Bottle...until I’ve just seen this thread. I feel so confused now (again) as to which brand to go with. Surely clients developing onycholysis would be due to incorrect application or overuse of the (BIAB) product? Any further info or views on this would be greatly appreciated!! TIA!

An increasing number of nail techs are reporting very serious cases on onycholysis suddenly occurring. In many cases the nail techs have years of experience behind them and some are even educators for the brand, so it’s not necessarily due to improper application. There is far more information about it than I can possibly provide here and TGB’s own Facebook group don’t authorise any negative posts so you’ll only see positive posts there. However, if you join Nail Technicians Allergy Support Group on Facebook you’ll read a lot about the allergies and onycholysis that nail techs and clients are experiencing. They don’t allow brand naming, but it is usually quite obvious which brands are being referred to (both TGB and Premier Gel, usually described as “square white bottle brands”)
Another group where brand names have been allowed is Nail Tech Awareness, although you will need to use the search bar and/or scroll back through previous posts as members have been asked not to post the same questions over and over (ie, asking what the problem is).

That is super helpful! I’ll go have a look and a read. Thank you so much!!!

I have recently bought The Gel Bottle range and absolutely love using the builders.

In terms of using a top coat - does anyone know if you can use the clear builder as a top coat? Will this work?

No, you can’t use any builder gel as a top coat.

Hi Beautiful-you.

Can i ask what brand you switched to please? I was planning on going back into nails and using TGB as most seem to use this is my local area, but after reading other things it has put me off. I used to do Gelish before covid hit and i stopped.

Thanks
