Sorry this is a very very long moan!

Started NVQ 2 hairdressing back in September 2006 at a private college – obviously paid a lot of money although fortunately not as much as some! At the time of starting my youngest was just one year old. I felt along with others on my course (some were on apprenticeship and a few others paid privately like me) that things weren’t great and we never seemed to progress. The head of the college was insistent at the time of booking onto it that you didn’t need to work in a salon but obviously I soon realised that this isn’t really the case where hairdressing is concerned and when I met the tutor that was one of her first questions she asked as to whether you worked in a salon. I stuck it out until about the March time but didn’t really feel I was getting anywhere and often felt I might as well be at home. One of the girls complained but just got attitude. I was paying monthly and to be honest wasn’t really motivated to keep paying but oh yes they were quick enough to send me a letter threatening court action if I didn’t complete my payments!!!!!

I eventually went back in November but everybody feels the whole place is a bit of a joke often turning up and the college isn’t even open!!!! We never seem to progress and my one example is the fact they have never even registered me with VTCT but of course have had an adequate amount of money out of me to cover the £15 registration fee! I am qualified in beauty and wanted to add to my treatments so did an IHM course in March at a really great college but as it turned out had to pay £15 to them to get registered because the other place has never bothered! Did phone VTCT but they just said it is up to the college to register you within 7 weeks and if they don’t then they don’t penalise the college or anything.

So my question is do I have a leg to stand on in complaining to somebody or are these shoddy colleges just allowed to take your money and we don’t have anywhere to turn. Surely these colleges are governed by somebody other than VTCT?!!

I would be grateful for any advice anyone has to offer as I know there are also quite a few other people angered by this at college and they would also appreciate your advice.

Any one able to offer any advice?!!!

Cheers

In order to deliver vocational qualifications, awarding bodies demand certain standards of teaching and learning, record keeping, assessments and internal verification etc. The awarding body can in exceptional circumstances remove approval to deliver qualifications. Maybe difficult to prove tho'. You mention some of the people on your course were apprentices - did the government pay their fees? If so, it will be a training organisation bound by certain regualtions and liable to inspection by OFSTED or similar inspection bodies.
