Hi everyone,

Im a qualified creative nail technician looking to get into the world of Hair. I was torn when i started nails but decided nails would be the way to go. Every time i walked past the teaching rooms for hair i felt jealous! Its now time to follow my heart and do it. Im 26 but what the hell..

Ive looked into courses at Huddersfield college which look great but have found along the way many people say they are none the wiser when they come out of college and private courses are best.

Im looking to see what you have done and which option you think best.

Im not old but think i need to step it up a gear instead of going to college for 3 years...Dont feel i need all the salon training, reception etc as im going mobile, Would like to do extensions but obviously need to be able to cut as well.

Anyone any ideas?

you will have to qulify at nvq level 2 which means u wil have to do reception health and safety etc. but sum college u may not have to do them if you have already completed them if you have done nvq level 2 in nails but you would have to ask. To do hair extentions as a separate course but im not 100% sure i think it depends on the college but good luck hth

Didnt think of that Trudie9. If ive already done the sections in nails i can miss them out in Hair? Health and safety etc. Just the timescale which is bothering me. I know there are fasttrack courses but they're very expensive.

Ive just been on Habia website and most courses have said if you are training towards level 2, you can go on the extensions course. Obviously so you can cut.

Thanks!
:)

Hi, I would definitely learn how to cut hair first before doing hair extensions as hair extensions are mainly cut by eye ,
eg just by looking at them you will know what needs to be done ,

usually by razor cutting or slicing them in ,

cutting techniques may be easy to learn ,
and cutting most hair extensions is usually pretty straightforward

but you can get harder heads of hair that will need specialist cutting to blend in certain areas of the style

and its usually only by years of experience that you will know where to place and use these specialist techniques ,

plus if you have spent that many hours fitting them in ,
you will want to make absolutely sure you are really confident at cutting them
anyways ,
good luck with your hairdressing whichever route you take, x

I am at college now since september full time as a mature student just completed level 1 Christmas now half way through level two....i was a mobile nail technician previously.....with matures they will fast track you so your first year will be all of level one and half of level 2 because some units are common sense the (g) units reception, positive impressions etc.....so you wont linger on these units for long we did 2 hour theory then sat that units exam the following week.....thats why they can move matures on quicker......i love college and have learnt so much.......i personally think its the best route, you get plenty of practical...ie working on clients in a salon environment......you have to do so many hours a week we do all Wednesday morning till 1 and Thursday afternoon till 4 for our "real working environment"....
personally you do learn a lot

Your college sounds like a very good college Joannne, you have done really well there , you are also very enthusiastic too which helps a lot ,

Perfect ten has the same enthusiasm ,
so you will both make fantastic hairdressers ,

You are nearly there now Joanne ,
how long have you got now ?

You should go for it Perfect ten
because if you truly love doing something you should try and do it ,

and as Joanne says you may be able to fast track ,
I fast tracked the Level 3 ,
I do think colleges try to help mature students all they can ,
plus it might not take as long as you think,
once again good luck  x

will miss it like mad when i break up for the summer....
go for it perfect ten.......you pay for level one but as an adult learner if you have never done an nvq2 before.....you dont pay for level two......
i would look into it now

Thank you all for your advice, from the comments and what other friends have said, i think college will be the best option. There was a doubt in the back of my mind that if i did a fast track (if i somehow managed to save!) i would come out feeling, well, rushed, as if i hadnt had time to take it all in and practice before heading into the world of hair!

Im really excited, just wish i had done it years back when i was a nipper!

I work away at present which will be another hurdle to conquer so i can go to college but its a sacrifice i think i need to make.

Hair extensions are so popular these days, i plan to train with cinderella hair? Any comments? whos best at the minute? I know there are various companies to choose from, possibly somewhere near home, leeds or bradford??
