Hi all, very new to this site, it seems great though!
Ever since i was young i always wanted to do something to do with hair and beauty etc but i sort of went down a different route and went to uni etc and have ended up as a business studies teacher in secondary school, very different i know!
i now earn quite good money and do like my job, its different every day and of course i love the holidays, who wouldnt! but there is part of me that always wishes i was doing a beauty industry based career. i have been considering doing a nail tech course and perhaps doing this in the evenings and weekends as a way of earning extra cash. am i crazy for wanting to do this too? i really wish i could have ended up as a teacher of this rather than business studies ha ha! i have no idea what you can earn or anything so i think im probably living in dream world. i sometimes think about running a business, i also do a cake decorating and card making so there is definatley a practical creative streak in me! anyway im sorry for the long post, just after your opinions really, when i talk to my boyfriend or other friends they tell me not to be so stupid as i have a good job with good money etc
has anyone else had massive career change like this?
thank you!

Im currently doing a nail tech course. Im 26, love my current job and all my work colleagues but just not what im wanting from life. As soon as I finish my course and hopefully pass it, Im taking a leap of faith. I have a very good job with pension, company car, great money but im just not happy and ive always wanted to do this and now I have the chance.
Dont listen to anyone else. Do it for You. Go for it as life is far far to short.

I'd say go for it if you want to. Especially if you can keep your current job. There is nothing to stop you transitioning into teaching beauty later - in fact already having the teaching qualification should stand in your favour. In fact being able to teach both business studies *and* beauty would make you even more versatile - it is always good to have more than one string to your bow!

For example, I work in IT, but could quite probably move into doing body painting professionally if I wanted to... turns out that IT is a much more steady earner though, so I do body painting as a hobby when I get the chance instead...

Hi, loads of us on here have taken the plunge and ditched our ex-careers to follow our passion for nails. I used to be a marketing consultant for an insurance company.....still haven't managed to match my salary there but I have job satisfaction now, which I didn't before.....good luck in what you decide to do!

Hi Mary, many years ago I did a degree in psychology and really loved it but beauty was always at the forefront of my mind, after completing my degree I got a job working with young volunerable people who were dependant on drugs, alcohol etc and really felt that I was giving something to the community. Then I decided to pursue my dreams of being a beauty therapist and nail technician and that's what I did.

wow you are like minded people, so nice to hear some encouragement for a change! think i will start looking into the cost of courses etc and when or where i could do it, i feel excited just thinking about it!
thank for your replies!

Hi hun, go for it you will only regret it if you dont, I finished work very early last year, due to ill health, and decided that was it I wasnt going to work again.
After my nail tech disapeared, I decided to do my own I always loved messing with nails, and having mine done, and that was that, got trained, still looking to train in other things now..waxing ..massage... Im 52 now, and its the best move I have made ...xxx

Hi
Only you know your personal circumstances and can make a decision. I did the same as you. I always wanted to do nails but became an accountant instead. (Family Pressure) Finally after a lot of years I have followed my heart and trained in nails. I work my normal job every day and am growing my nail business after hours. It takes quite a bit of dedication and determination but if you have these qualities and are able to organsie yourself well, you have nothing to lose.
I have never been happier

I was in a VERY well paid job with loads of company perks but I was miserable! Decided to take the plunge and move into nails - my first pay packet I used to pay more in tax than I took home!!!!! It's been a struggle financially, and if you are thinking of self employment then it's not for the faint hearted, but I wouldn't have changed it for anything. After all I'd never have been able to move to Spain if I was still in Fleet Car Sales!

Only thing is be prepared for the family saying things like - you're too intelligent why do you want to do that?! Or, what's wrong with your proper job?!!!!

Good luck, but be careful in this current economic climate- it's harder than ever right now, but a positive attitude and determination could win the day.

I studied Politics and sociology and got into nails whilst studying then left to 'do nails' full time and havent looked back. I didnt as much throw as catapult myself into the industry racking up so many courses that my goal of wanting to teach came naturally in this industry.
I still view things from a sociological POV and will hopefully next year devote some free time to helping early school leavers to gain a career in the nail industry.

On a money note I spent every penny I had for about 4 years on nail education and products, I stopped for a lil while and then started spending again. After 7 years I still have no cash and am exhausted as I opened my own salon this year.............. am I bothered NO! I absolutely love what I do I now have a successful salon, a good income from teaching and my interests never goes away.

The good thing for you is that you have holidays to plan your training, good hours to practice and when yor ready you can head out into a salon

Get yourself a copy of Scratch magazine after you read that you'll be chomping at the bit!!

Good luck and feel free to PM if you need anything
