Do you offer alcohol in your salon at all, evenings etc, and if so do you have a licence to do so?

PM me if you would prefer!

u need dram ins for this!

i have no idea if this is true.... BUT
i was once told as if you are not charging for the alcohol, your giving it away so no need for a licence...

Here's a quote I've taken from this, useful, website:- Serving Food and Alcohol in your Salon "If there's any suggestion that the alcohol being provided is linked to a sale, then a licence is needed."

looks like they don't know themselves!
It would be a lovely add on to some evening appointments and at £37 a year isn't such an expense, but talking £100 per year is a bit steep.

also, don't know about your local council but when you ring up for things like this they generally don't know what you are talking about. I would also suggest that if you ring your local council up and they verbally tell you "its Ok" ask them to put that in an email.

I contacted my local council about offering acupuncture and 3 years later still waiting for them to get back to me, after numerous attempts at contacting them.

I know what you mean, but my council 'famously' hit the headlines with it's clear stance on salons serving alcohol over the Christmas period, please read this... 'Scrooge' council chiefs send in spies to make sure hairdressers don't hand out Christmas wine | Mail Online :)

Licensing laws are really strict! Offering a free glass of wine to a client is definitely linked to a sale. Also, it isn't just about the annual cost. A license needs to be applied for and this involves the local council and the magistrates court. Even temporary licenses for an one-off event involves lots of form filling and a court appearance by the proposed license holder

Argh I've just seen this what a bummer! We always give a little glass of mulled wine out in the Christmas week! SCROOGES! :'(

hiya i know the answer to this 1 . we do alchol beer 4 gents wine 4 ladies if the cost is not in price of the service example cut and finish 20 pounds then drink 3pounds bill 23 pounds... u do not need a licence ... if u charge then u have to have a licence xx

If you're serving alcohol in your salon you DO need a licence. The only way you can possibly get around this is if either your services are free or anyone can walk in off the street and ask for a free drink. And even then it's a bit touch and go as to whether they believe you or not.

Even if you say you don't charge for alcohol and it's free - if they're paying for a service from you and part of that service says something like "free glass of wine" you're essentially using alcohol to entice your customers to buy your service and therefore selling the alcohol.

I am in the process of applying for an alcohol licence right now. The law is quite clear on this issue though - I don't know why there's any confusion personally. If you serve alcohol in your salon you need an alcohol licence even if it's "free" unless the whole service is free it's classed as part of the "package" you're selling.

In the uk you need a licence to serve drinks whether you charge them or not. As the salon owner you do not have to be the licencee but someone you employee must hold one if you do not.

The same principle applies for pubs. Whether they charge for it or not, they still need a licence to within their grounds/establishment.

Your best best is to ring your local council and have a word. You may be able to get hold of some sort of day pass (imagine stalls at concerts etc) that allows you to serve it for a couple of days over this period but I would imagine you would still need a licence of some sort. But I would ensure a written copy of it, just to cover yourself.

Sorry I cannot remember more but I havent worked in a pub/club for a few years since starting nails so my info might be out of date, hth's

P.S This Link posted earlier, pretty much hits the spot for the uk

All very helpful ta very mucho :) One of the girls makes the mulled wine herself and we have ALWAYS offered a small glass to our clients in Christmas week. Never advertised. And mince pies to go with them! It'd be a shame to give this up. Also, we've been talking about doing open evenings in the new year and it's always nice to offer a drink for this occasions. Nice for brides on weddings as well. Worth investing I'd think!
