When I did my mani and pedi course a while back, the tutor told me that all feet carry a fungus...now she said it could be very mild to quite extreme..which is why all feet smell!

Is this true?

Bacteria not fungus.

Our skin is covered with (healthy) bacteria. Any unhealthy bacteria is dealt with by the acid mantle. Bacteria react with they type of sweat (there are 2 types of sweat glands) that are found on our feet and under our arms and that is what can smell.

No it is not.

Exactly as Marian (mum) said. Bacteria on the feet yes always .. fungus NO.

Ditto what the others have said

- if you had any kind of fungus you would have an infection - not good can lead to worse things, you would need it checked out

oh you ladies make pedicures sound so attractive!! lol
x

Thank-you for clearing this up for me

Too be honest it's not good that these tutors give out wrong information

But now I'm wiser thanks to you guys :)

Your tutor is absolutely correct. (sorry to disagree). Fungus lives on our bodies on surface dead skin cells and is usually harmless. Problems appear when the concentration of the fungus becomes excessive or breaks below the surface of the skin, as in the case of atheletes foot, causing bacteria to grow. But fungus lives perfectly normally on human skin, usually completely harmless.

You only get a problem with fungus and fungal infections if there is a breakdown in the skin integrity and usually problems occur when personal hygiene isnt adhered to, if you have chronic diseases and of course if you use steriods for any length of time, these can all breakdown the skin integrity and delay in the healing process of a particular area which can indeed and does lead to Athletes foot.

I love doing pedis...and in answer to the original question about all feet smelling, from my experience dealing with feet , there are only a few feet I come accross that smell which can be deemed not only down to an infection but inappropriate footwear which does make the clients feet smell and can be linked to the things listed in the first paragraph

daisyl is right in the respect that harmless fungal organisms are common on the skin.
Mum & Geeg are also right, we are coated, literally in bacteria.

Both are not an issue under normal circumstances.

The odour that nail techs (pedicurists) generally face is from an overgrowth of bacteria
"brevibacteria" (which is naturally on us) and only occurs when there is a build up sweat that can not evaporate.

Athletes foot, or other fungal 'infections' occur when an aggressive and specific fungal spore (tinea - Trichophyton) is given the opportunity to grow, ie, cracked or broken skin. then and only then will it burrow in and grow within the skin. Good hygene & foot health are the best prevention.

In answer to the original post - your tutor is misleading, as the VAST majority of foot odour will be bacterial.

hope that helps everyone.

i have a man who comes for a pedicure m ive noticed latlet his big toe nail is coming away and its quite low down now :( would this be ill fitting shoe or fungal it looks like when you have a gel nail and u bang it , and it pulls nail away when pings off lol if you can iterperate that !!! x

eeks i am in the wrong bus if this was true!!! lol have wall to wall gel toes at moment no this is not true any way sanitise those tootsies and all is good xxxx ditto all said before sorry but this rather made me chuckle ;)

Under NORMAL conditions it is BACTERIA that reacts with sweat and causes feet to smell. Simple question; simple answer. If what the tutor sated in the original question suggests anything else it is inaccurate.

As a wider answer, of course a fungal INFECTION can cause feet to smell! As already stated, this is when the integrity of the skin is broken down and the fungus has taken hold.

A further answer: if the toe nail is lifting and there is a whitish debris under the nail it could suggest a fungal infection. A pharmacist could help.
