Just to update as I posted this before my hols...

went away for 2 weeks and finger and thumb healed perfectly

2 or 3 days after working again, they started to split and sting. Since then I have been applying Epaderm (eczema/psoriasis/dry skin cream) all the time, and as I am ok with latex I have bought some gloves and as wearing the whole gloves just makes me hot and grumpy I cut the fingers off and just wear the fingers! They are easy to just pull off after the acetone stage and slip on again later if necessary. And Im almost healed again.

How are you all getting on? x

Blossom, have you seen the finger cots you can buy? Search in eBay, they are fantastic!!!!

Thank you all for your advice, have just ordered some Nitrile gloves this morning. It was originally latex gloves that caused my contact dermatitis and now turns out it's the Gelish cleanse and acetone too that's causing the allergy. I'm devastated 😔 The doctor told me that sweating while wearing the gloves can aggravate the dermatitis, does anyone know if there is some sort of medicated powder that I can put inside the new nitrile gloves? I did order the powder free ones.

Nitrile gloves, are a must for me now. Better be safe and sorry. I also use Dermashield, look it up. they are like skin gloves.

I just looked Dermashield up there! It sounds absolutely amazing! Sounds like the answer to all my problems! Do you still wear gloves as well as using this?

Iv had this for 10 weeks now. I practically have no skin on 4 of my fingers. Iv pinpointed I'm allergic to acrylic and nitrile gloves. I went to the doctor and got told to stop using these products. Epiderm cream is only an intense moisturiser you need something like fucibet cream that contains an antibiotic. Iv resorted to wearing cotton gloves with nitrile over the top but they aren't waterproof.

To stop this happening iv booked on a cnd gel conversion course as I think il be less exposed to too much wet product. This is my last resort before giving up enhancements xx

I've been going through the same thing for 4 years and I've finally had enough. I'm going to a specialist to be tested for specific ingredients in the gel polishes I use. OPI Gelcolor, Shellac and Gelish. I've already been tested for them and I had a reaction to them all. Hopefully we can pinpoint which ingredients are doing it. It takes 6 weeks for the skin to heal, so if you continue doing what you're doing your will only make it worse. I know firsthand because I suffered through the pain and breathing issues and tried everything imaginable for 4 years. I just posted on another thread about this with pictures of my latest outbreak.
Good luck, Kelly*

I've had few splits on my right hand index and thumb for a couple of weeks, and every time I use acetone it stings like hell and they will not heel up. I try to use other fingers but its difficult.

Ive been trying to use my left hand for acetone and Dsperse. But tonight its really bad. My finger and thumb are quite pink, warmer than the other fingers, and the index finger is throbbing. Now the middle finger is sore near the nail edge.

I've also got a little bumpy rash, like tiny raised dots under the skin, which break like blisters when I scratch like mad, which I do cos they itch sooo much

Am I allergic to my products? Anyone else had this and what did you do to help it? I've been doing nails 10 years.

What a nightmare. :(

Yes I was allergic to Bio Sculptures sanitise.
I had the same reaction.

I now wear gloves when I work &swopped to NSI Nail Pure Plus

Keep in mind that you are most likely NOT allergic to the solvent (acetone/dSperse/etc...) it is most likely due to continual overexposure to the product you are using it on.

This really isn't an issue for removal as the polymer is inert, but can be common when the product is uncured or undercured (more so with Gels than other types of enhancement products).

The inhibition layer you remove with alcohol/Dsperse after completing a gel service is a layer rich in uncured gel (because it is surrounded with oxygen and that slows down polymerization). When you remove it with a pad, the solvent (alcohol based usually) will break up the uncured gel. If that then gets on your skin, its pretty much like putting uncured product on your skin. Over time, you can become sensitized in this area as your body reacts by trying to fight what it perceives to be an attack (this is an allergic reaction).

That explains why if you take a break, the problem stops. Until you expose yourself again. Each repeated exposure will gradually increase the severity of the reaction.

The solution is to avoid getting uncured products on your skin. Latex gloves suck as they are all natural and have a high tendency to cause allergic reactions by themselves! Nitrile is a synthetic material which is pretty resistant to most solvents in the salon and a great solution for anyone who might repeatedly get uncured product on their skin.

Another item that can help are plastic backed pads. They are more dear, but it helps keep the broken up inhibition layer from your skin.

Good luck, hope this helps!

This is my first post so be patient with me!

I opened my little salon in April having just qualified. In may I quite badly cut both of my hands open. In the weeks after I started to react to my gel polish that I had been using on myself and clients for months. I assumed it was the brand I was using and invested in a brand new range. I started reacting to the new brand as well.
I have suffered a number of awful break out on both my hands and arms, symptoms including swollen, throbbing skin, open blisters, discolored thick skin, damage to my nail bed. This has resulted in a lot of trips to the doctors and over a £150 spent on prescriptions for antibiotics, steroids, steroid creams and antibiotic creams. I am now being seen by a skin clinic for a suspected allergy to Acrylates. I am waiting for my appointment for allergy testing to confirm it.These are ingredients in a lot of gel polishes, gel products and acrylic nails. I was told last week by my doctor that it is one of the most common allergy's that she sees at the clinic.

I cannot wear any type of gel polish, which I adore, and cannot get any type of gel polish remover or gel any where near my skin or I will instantly react. I can wear standard nail polish without any problems. I have to work wearing two pairs of nitrile gloves,as one does not protect my skin. I also have to wear the disposable sleeves that tattooist wear to protect my arms. I look like I'm about to perform surgery when I'm only doing a set of nails.
I've got it under control at the moment but there has been times when I have considered giving up. Invest in some really good gloves to protect your skin and seek some medical advice.? Good luck because I would not wish anyone to go through what I have recently x x
