Hey guys, just thought I'd post this and see what you think about the situation...

I mentioned to a few weeks ago that I got a job after doing a trade test at a salon, however when it came to the end of the day she said she could only offer me a freelance position, and she would call me in on the days she had bookings, but assured me that I had got the job and that I would have a column in which they would book nail treatments ..... that was about 3 weeks ago and still no phone call. It was weird because the woman seemed lovely and impressed with my work.....

What I hadn?t metioned in the last post was that when I did the trade test it was on an actual paying client, then once I had finished, another client booked in. The woman asked if I would mind staying behind and doing another set as she obviously didn't have a nail tech ( new salon btw) ( obviously I stayed, wanted the job:green:) lol, anyways I did another paying client using my own products, was in the salon from 9.30 til about 3, didn't get squared up for the

Anyways to my point/ question, cos I'm curious about this, is it possible that the salon owner is getting other applicants to do trade tests on paying clients, without her having to pay them? I know it sounds a bit crazy, but it's just odd because her add is still up on gumtree and she assured me that I'd got the job and that I was officially her nail tech, yet haven't heard a thing. I know it's a new salon but the prices are fairly cheap ( on offer for now) so it's weird that she wouldn't have had any nail appointments in....

I don't like to think people are capable of this kind of thing, but have to admit it did cross my mind....what do you fellow geeks think????

x x x x:lol:

Hi, You could be right but you have no way of finding out really, it is very strange that she hasnt been back in touch with you, especially if she was happy with your work. Its also very strange that she hasnt taken any new bookings? Is she advertising the Nail side of the business? Have you passed the shop since your interview to see if there is a nail tech in there? Get a friend to phone and make a booking for a full set off nails and see if she contacts you, if she does, then get your friend to call back later to cancel, that will let you know? :)

I would just call in and ask.......

I would just call in and ask.......

I agree with what is said by PeepPaws, call in and ask, by the way a trade test isn't usually done on clients that are paying the salon, that in my opinion is cheeky especially 2 sets!! Just go ask at least then you will know for definate if you have the job or not, just say that you noticed that she hasn't taken the ad down yet on gumtree etc, good luck hun.Xxxx

Thanks guys, I considered making a fake CV and applying 2 it, but calling is sooo much easier: I can't believe I didn't think of it. lol

I've got another trade test in a salon today ( so nervous!) so if I get the job, I'm just going to forget about the other one. I kind of already had as it has been so long. lol

Yes, I thought doing a trade test on paying clients was weird too, I mean she made 50quid out of me, and couldn't even pay to cover my own products. You're right, that is cheeky lol ... Oh well, hopefully things will go well today. I won't even have to bother thinking about it :green:

thanks for your thoughts x x xx

Expecting you to do a trade test on a paying client and the taking payment for the full amount is dreadful!! Did the client know it was a trade test?

Then asking you to stay for another client and not offering you some of the payment is double dreadful! There is something not right and I think demonstrates that the owner is going to continue to take advantage. I would call and ask what her decision is and ask for some small payment for the 2 paying clients!

Yes I know, I didnt really think it was right, she had made a decision, I had the job, but the she said it was only freelance, I thought maybe she was just doing this with all her applicants, to make a good profit, without having to pay anyone it's pretty sick to think that someone would do that especially as she seemed really nice, but there's not really any other explanation, have you ever heard of anyone doing this before?? It's actually pretty genious if you think about it lol x x x

You know, I can't help thinking that you yourself have been a big help in letting this person get away with what she has got away with.

You put allot of  in your posts, but I don't think any of it is funny.

Why did you leave without asking for the money for your products?
Why did you not ring and ask when you were going to start as she had promised you the job?
Why have you left the whole thing for so long?
I don't in fact think you yourself have acted as a professional should IMO.

I think you should go to the salon and present her with a bill for your products and time as you both worked on clients that paid for the service YOU provided and did not get the job you were promised.

If this woman is messing about defrauding people who are applying for a job then unless you do this, she will keep on getting away with it.

I really think you should be a bit more serious about the whole thing instead of laughing at it. I would also tell the woman that if she does not settle up with you, that you intend to go and report her to the Inland Revenue as I bet you she hasn't decalred any of that cash she defrauded you of.

Well as you know I am new to this trade, it was my first ever trade test, didn't even know what to expect, at the time I wasn't really thinking about the money, just the job. I was in shock when she told me she could only offer me a freelance position.....plus money is a hard subject to talk about.
The reason I didn't ring to ask when I started is because she said she would ring me when she got clients booked. It's a brand new salon firgured it takes time to build, thought give it a bit of time, maybe she hasn't been that busy for nails, that's why I left it for a bit, didn't want to seem pushy.

As I have never experienced this before, I didnt know what the correct measures were, thought I'd post it up and see if anyone had come across a situtation like this.

As for the :green: I'm trying not to put such a downer on the sitution seem like a moan, look on the brightside, silver lining etc

For the sake of what £10 to cover my products, I don't really think its worth the hassle of asking for it back, Glasgow's a small place, rumours spread easily, as a new nail technition, a bad reputation at the start is never good for business.

As for her defrauding other people, this is a speculation an opinion so I have no solid proof, can't just go around accusing people of things when you don't know for certain.

Hope that cleared up your questions :green:

Well I just hope you have lerned now what to expect and not to be taken for a ride again.

You don't get clients booking when there is no nail technician in the salon!!! And you don't build business ever by not being there. Sonetimes you need to be pushy.

I should think any rumours would be about HER reputation and not yours. For the street cred it would give you alone it would be good to ask for themoney back. Asking would certainly not give you a bad repiutation.

Well she has successfully defrauded YOU. You know that for certain at any rate.

Hope that cleared up your questions :green:
Actually no it hasn't. I don't agree with any of the answers you have used to explain why you didn't, nor seem to want to, take any action.

Personally, I think this owner has duped you and you are in full rights to go see her and demand payment for your supplies and for your time (for the second set).

What is "freelance"? Does this mean she is renting space to you, or are you paying her a percentage of your takings? I'm assuming she's expecting you to be self-employed, but she needs to be clear what the position entails. You need details, and a written contract.

Geeg is right that you would need to be there to be able to get business into the salon. Waiting for this owner to do it won't work - that's already been proven. Once you guys sort out a deal (if you still want to work with her, that is...), you would need to be in a salon, ready to work if someone drops in, and promoting yourself as much as you can to get people in the door.

You can do it! Have confidence in your skills, and stand up for yourself!

Geeg - I can see where you are coming from on this, but I see the other side too. A lot of nail techs we see here on the boards are young, inexperienced, and not exactly brimming with confidence. In many cases, this is their first job ever. They don't know how the system works, they don't know what the rules are, and it's very easy to take advantage of them.

That said, they need to educate themselves and take charge of their careers, but I can see how scary speaking up to an owner would be. Heck, I'm a lot older than them and I still get nervous when dealing with difficult clients!

So as frustrating as it is for us to watch it happen, they are new at this and that's why they come here... to learn. I don't think Soozi is being difficult, she's just trying to protect her reputation and get established. Without putting words into her mouth, I'd be guessing she's probably scared to rock the boat in case this owner speaks badly about her. You are right that she needs to stand up to the owner, but it's a hard skill to learn.

It's so hard for some people to ask for money, they almost feel guilty for mentioning the common stuff!
Ok, so it cost you £10 in products, but what about your time hun? We charge for our time because that's a good yard stick to use for all the time we have spent training and practicing. You said she took £50 well I would say that £10 is a fair cut for her to have. It's your products your skill and your time.
It's her space and her booking.
If facing her is a problem for you then send her an invoice with a 7 day notice to pay.
Then get your self to a business development meeting. Ask your bank about these, they are free and they will help you to sort out how you go about billing customers, how to word it, what's fair, what the tax man will expect from you. Talent is just as necessary as hard work, but the only way to make a success of your business is to be a business woman and that means toughen up or get eaten up.
