Hey geeks i was just wondering, around where i live it is normal in the salon to do a bit of everything. But I know in bigger areas there are seperate colourists/stylists etc. I was just wondering what made you decide to specialise or would you if you had the chance specialise and do away with the parts of hairdressing you dont like and concentrate on one area say colouring?xxxxx

Well as it's just me at my salon I have to do everything but given the option I would quite happily hang my scissors up and be a full time colourist.

Both myself, and all of the stylists who work for me are all rounders.

I wish i was an all rounder , but im a more cut and colour, and perm person. I have trouble with blow drying, always have especially those old lady ones that all go into the middle with a way grown out perm. Ive since found out my son has dyspraxia and im wondering if i have it too as i look fantasticly kack handed and my arms are weak so it may explain the blowdrying! Still we all find our own way , thank god for tongs and straighteners ( lazy i know , but finish it off nicely). I started off just doing colour, then my colouring clients became my cutting clients and the rest is history.

In the salon i work in we all just specialise in one, i'm just finishing off training to be a technician however would probably like to do both if it wasn't so stressful!!

I specialized originally in cutting and still do it. I specialize now in hair extensions. Colouring is something I think I would like to get back into though.

i love and do very well at all except bridal hair and any sort of hair ups, i dislike them immensly and cant get my head round them hahah x

I dont specialize in any one are but....
I love cutting have done scince i first picked up the scissors in my first week at college and lobbed my sons hair off and brought him to tears..lol I love cutting how immediate it is ..love it..feel comfortable doing it.
colouring although I have completed level 3 I am still learning and sometimes it scares me still..lol
perming....ok...everything great apart from the nuetralising process...
and i do love blow drying but i feel this is an underestimated artform tbh.....I have found it the hardest...and it still facinates me watching someone blowdrying especially when the results are fab...but hey still learning and will conitnue for the rest of my life me thinks..
as for the grown at perms on the older lady..yep love those tongs too
scotty...I aint no bridal specialist either mate xx
so for me cutting is my forte...and my biggest enjoyment

I hate hair up's too, far to fiddily and gets me irritated rather quickly :D

I love cutting, barbering, don't find blowdry's a problem even enjoy perming but colouring - not my strength I'm too worried it'll go wrong!

I think as a freelance Hairdresser you have to be an allrounder because you won't be working alongside anyone else.

There was another thread about Barbering and fear of clippers and blending - I've always loved scissor over comb blending - brilliant, but I was cutting a boys hair the other day and for the first time ever in 20yrs the guide guide came off and I didn't notice until I'd taken a rectangle section of hair completely off! I acted calm and thankfully it was at the hairline and I did some pretty fantastic blending - no-one noticed.:o

never be complacent I say!

whats brown and sticky????????

...a stick!

I'm an all rounder, but hair up is my weakest point too. I am ok at them, what styles I can do, I do fine. But I lack knowledge in the more fiddly styles and I dread someone asking for them.

Colouring is my favourite aspect, I love the creativity of it and trying new colours. Old lady blow dry's aren't a strong point either tbh, but I have got so much better since being mobile and having more time to work on it.

as a freelancer i do it all, but love love love cutting. I work parttime in a barber shop and love it as its just cutting all day long.
would love to be better at colour know the basics, thats why I love this website am always learing something new about coloring!!!

I do everything. When I finished college I worried if I specialised in anything, I'd lose what I'd learnt at college. I thought when I was older I may do something specific.

However now, I've got the salon so I'm glad I do it all. I just do what people want me to do!!!!

I do everything, however, like some of the other guys on here, I don't like doing hair ups! I love the way it looks when it's done properly, but it's just not for me. I love cutting and colouring and that look on someone's face when they are happy with what you've done, it's a great feeling :)

I love hair ups, the fiddlier the better. Blowdrys are a peice of cake, the more complex the cut the better. Plaits? no probs.

The gap in my knowledge is afro hair, never done it and have no idea how to straighten or colour it.

I used to do it all, get them chemically dependant I say.... but now I just teach it all. When I say all I mean it, cutting, coloring, perming- super tight old lady perms to soft textural support for the younger set, little old ladies, bridal and hair ups, nails, nail art, make up, waxing, skin care, hair extentions and eye lash extentions, afro hair- perming, relaxing, styling, coloring and education for clients of mixed parents.

As for what I like best.... depends on the mood, the client and what limitationsthey give me. I'd have to say color & cut, or nails/art. Really any thing that makes a major difference, quickly!!

I am an all rounder and at different times in my career have specialised in different areas. I am not a fan of those teeny, tiny braids that the kids love in the summer. It seems to take me ages but I have a girl in the salon who is a whizz at them!

I think my areas of weakness would be barbering. I do plenty of gents cuts but ever now and then you get someone who prefers a barbering technique. I'd also love to learn how to shave those really complex pattens in. I do some pattern shaving but not the heavy duty stuff. I worked a while with afro hair but have never learnt how to extend it. I would love to but in my area I live in now there is no call for it, it is mainly a white population.

true!! we sure are a mixed bunch!!lol:lol: im wit persianista on the hairups fiddlier the better i reckon, and as 4 the braids minky totaly get u on the braids thing lol:lol: colouring is what i really get out of bed 4 though, however nothing is more thrilling than seein a client walk in like shes just come out of a dark alley roughed up buy sumbody, you work ur magic, a stunning cut/colour/style later u could mistake them 4 a celebrity! i hav 2 say it feels pretty bloody good!! wuld any1 agree??:D:D:D

Agreed! Our job is a lovely thing to be able to do.

I do love a difficult precision cut. I think thats my favourite.

Hello there

I am freelance so so both.
Even if you are young, you need to think about your future.

You may not always want to work in a salon. You may meet the man of your dreams and get married and start a family. Hairdressing is an amazing trade that gives you the ability to travel anywhere in the world, or work from home/freelance at times that suit you and your family.

If I only specialsed in cutting my client base would not be as healthy, my clients want a one stop shop and I can offer that. I also think that to do both gives diversity and prevents you feeling you are stuck in a rut.

Good luck and I hope my advice as been helpful. x
