Hi all,

I'm considering becoming a vegetarian and I was just wondering if anyone else is one? Or has anyone recently become one?

Just wanted to hear geeks reasons for doing it? Or why you haven't?

Thanks

I simply could not become a veggie as I absolutely LOOOOOOVVVVEEE food!!!
Me and my fella have got the biggest appetites

The only food that I know of not liking is beetroot and I don't think there are many foods out there that I haven't tried!!

I could not diet or try to cut out certain foods out as I know I would want them more!!

But if you have your reasons to become a veggie and you think that you will be fine without meat then you do it..

I know that veggies and vegans all have their own reasons for becoming one and there are many many gorgeous foods out there that don't include meat/fish or dairy products, so you should do what feels right!!

Its been over 20 years since i decided to stop eating meat.

Once in a flood i will have a bacon sarnie (usualy once a year) and i have to remove all traces of fat/rind and literaly cremate it lol

Im also not fussed on eating eggs, cheese, yoghurts and have very little milk usually opting for my tea/coffee black.

I cant pinpoint why i chose to be a none meat/dairy eater, i think its more to do with the taste/texture that i dont like.

I cant say ive lacked anything in my diet as i eat plenty of bread, pasta, rice, fruit, veg.

Hello

Just wondered what your reasons are for wanting to be veggie?

Health / financial / animal welfare ?

We eat organic meat at home (although I will eat pretty much anything in a restaurant) and although it's expensive, it is healthier as it's not pumped full of hormones etc, and organic farming has to comply with strict codes of conduct so I am happy that the animals I'm eating have had the happiest life possible.

I have considered becoming veggie but I find I have to put so much more effort into making a veggie meal, and I just don't have the time.

And I love meat! Yum yum!

hi I am a veggie and very proud of it!! eating food which once had a face to me is not nice!
I have not eaten meat since 1984 I was 14 and my only problem is I'm 11 stone overweight and I do think being a veggie hasn't helped. I'm a hairdresser and you know whats that like, not being able to get your dinner or not eating at all, and then absolutley no choice at the local sarni shop so I'll end up just eating chocolate or loads of cheese!

visit the vegetarian society web site for plenty of help and advice.

Hi,
I'm not a total veggie i eat fish and sea food.. a total veggie says "if it has a face its not food" i was brought up in a fishing village in the middle east and meat was very expensive so we ate fish... i cant stand the taste or texture of meat now but i will cook the odd thing for my partner... i never did the none eating meat thing for the sake of the animals when i was younger but now i do... there are may good substitute suck as quorn ( many makes), these are all healthy and high in protein... so no worries about putting weight on cause ur not eating meat...hth... good luck with what ever you choose...

well my personal reason is to do with my love of animals. For so long I have considered stopping meat in my diet because I don't agree with how its killed or how the animal lives before it dies. I don't want to preach to people thats not my thing just wanted some other people's opinons.

I love meat, but I feel the biggest hippocrite for eating it. I think I would stop milk and cheese too after looking on the PETA website.

Do you have to start taking suppluments because of the lack of meat in your diet?

I became veggie again at the beginning of this year. It was Jamie Oliver's fault! :green: There's been so many programmes on about how badly animals are treated that I decided I didn't want to be a part of it any more.

I was veggie all through my teens but I started eating meat again mainly because there were so few veggie alternatives. Nowadays there's LOADS! I love the quorn escalopes, quorn "chicken" dippers, linda mccartney lasagna... the list goes on and on!

Hey Bexi,

PETA is a great organisation BUT dont take it too literally or all too heart.... classic comment from one of its members... Pamela Anderson.... " i love my Ugg boots and wear them all the time".... " oops i didnt realise they where made from animals"..... PETA is very extreme in all its view but true i have to say... also cutting out all dairy can be a serious health risk.... pls have a good old think about it all before you do what ever you are gonna do... do what you think is right by what you believe not what you are told.. if you think your 100% sure for your reasons then go for it.. Good Luck Hun ....

I became a veggie when I was about 11, having sunday lunch and looked at the beef and thought 'eeeewwwwwww dead cow' and have been a veggie ever since. I do not eat meat or fish. If you become a veggie get used to being treated like a second class citezen, and having to double check food labels as some things go from being veggie to non-veggie in the blink of an eye! Also you may get tired of explaining yourself to people, I know I do!

there is no way on earth i could be a veggie!!! I love most meat......however.... I am very aware what i buy and always make sure it is free range/ organic.
I watched a programme on bbc3 called kill it cook it eat it and it showed the whole slaughter process....not to gross people out but to educate peope so they know how it is done...and i am glad i did watch it because it showed some undercover film taken from farms abroad which are just awful! I feel better in knowing that the meat i am eating has lived a good life up to its death and was free to roam in the open air.
It makes me feel sick walking down the isle of a supermarket after watching jamie olivers/ gorden ramsey show....which is why i go to my local butchers on a farm....it is by far an awful lot better.
This is just me.....i would never judge anyone who chooses to be a veggie....i totally get why most do it, its just not for me.

I became a strict vegetarian at school, it coincided with pictures on the news of the seal culling and a class visit from beauty without cruelty.

I never really enjoyed meat, and my favourite part of my roast dinner with the veggies and roast pots, so it was no great deal for me, I NEVER craved or drooled over meat and bacon sarnies just didn't do anything for me!

I spent 2 years in Catering college, still a strict vegi, even more determined when one of my lecturers tried to forcefeed me. I even considered specialising in butchery to stick 2 fingers up at her.

I slipped once in my next college course when I was taken for a romantic meal by my first boyfriend and they had no vegi food.

I moved home, having been a strict vegi for 6 years and met my (now) husband who is a devoted meat eater. He has slowly nagged me into eating some meat. The crux of it was when I went to a restaurant renowned for its vegi food for my birthday. I asked for the vegi menu and was told that the vegi chef's day off so they could only offer me a cheese salad.

I now eat chicken, duck and some fish. I haven't eaten RED MEAT in 24 years.

Im vegitarian, have been since the age of 13, Im now 30! Dont miss meat at all!

Thank you for all your comments. Its nice to see all views.

I understand PETA can be very strong in its views, but it did open my eyes to how animals are treated and killed. The more I think about it the more I worry where I can draw the line. If you don't eat meat - why should you wear leather etc? I don't want to become obsessed.

I also feel that cutting out meat will help me to vary my diet more.

I don't eat fish anyway, and personally don't understand veggies who still eat fish. I'm not being disrespectful to anyone who is.

im veggie have been since i was 9, im 23 soon. im so proud i stuck to it and there is no way on earth i could eat meat now, i nearly ate a bit of ham in a pot pasta thing once and threw up when i saw it!
i personally think its cruel and unessasary to eat an animal, although i do not preach about this as i know it is natural. i personally think its gross to eat something that ate other things and pooed and stuff, i just think y would you want to eat it?!
ive alwasy ate milk and eggs but recently gone off eggs, although i made myself have an egg sandwich yesterday as i dont want to be restricted on eggs as well but i struggled with it. do other veggies think eating an egg is like eating a feotes? (sp?)
x

i'm not yet but eating eggs is like eating chicken period - lol!

I have been veggie for over 18 years and just cannot bear the thought of eating an animal - if you need any advice just PM me hun.

:rolleyes:OOOOOh no way could I give up meat. I love it all meat. I spent 20 years in catering. And spent several years running pubs and hotels. So there really isn't any meat i haven't tried. But the one thing i wont eat is horse. Yuk not my cuppa tea but everything else is fair game. Wish i could my kids keep asking but i love meat too much. But to all the vegetarian's I salute you. As its so hard to keep the right balance and make sure your healthy when cutting meat out.:o
