My 9 month old has been struggling with really bad eczema for a couple of months. He had it really bad on his front & back but it has cleared up now, however it is extremelly bad on his forehead & cheeks. It keeps him up all night the poor little thing! The doctors gave me some steroid cream to use but he was only alowed it for 4 weeks it was brilliant but as soon as i stopped using it, it came back. They told me to just keep moisturising it at least 5 time a day. I do this if not more as it really irritates him but it's not doing anything. It keeps getting infected & the only thing that stops it from getting infected is Sudocrem but it doesn't clear it up. They told me not to use that but it works better than anything they have given me! It's starting to frustrate me now, i have tried everything. Can anyone help? Surely a skin geek must know something about this condition, thanks x

I would bathe him in Balneum Plus and sponge it over his face and try to be a little patient as it is not strong like a steroid but should really help over time.

I think you need to keep badgering the doctors and get to see a specialist. He may suffer from a food intolerance or allergy do you have pets. There can be many reasons but for most GPS its the easiest option to send you away with mild cortisone cream.Which is fine when its a little bit here and there that doesn't bother baby much but not in your case and especially if its a struggle to stop it getting infected. That can be really dangerous.
They really should be referring you.Go back and demand it.

My son had really bad eczema until he was around 15 months, red raw and infected constantly it was through his hair his back, neck ears & elbow and knees. His hair would come out in clumps with the skin :( I found using fairy non-bio washing powder, diprobath, diprobase & the steroid cream when it got really bad but as you say you can't use it constantly and although it all helped nothing cleared him up, he now has no eczema! Although the doctor said it wasn't I'm convinced it was the Sma formula milk as as soon as he went onto cows milk it cleared up!

Have you tried Epaderm ointment or cream. This worked really well with my daughter. It's thick and greasy but was really good, you can use it as an emollient in the bath to cleanse the skin too.
If you find that it isn't improving and also if it getting infected, I would seriously think about asking to get referred to a children's dermatologist. I did this in the end with my daughter, she had terrible eczema on her feet. After 6 months of seeing her GP , I asked to be referred as I didn't feel we were getting anywhere. The dermatologist was great! It did take a 6 week course of antibiotics as well as a strict routine of bathing, applying creams in the correct order and bandaging her feet but it worked. She was 4 when she was going through this and I really thought her poor little feet would be scarred after everything but if you look at them now(age 6)you would never know.
Hope this helps a bit...good luck! Xx

My two kids had it when they were small. I agree with fairy washing powder. Never use anything else.
I found that jojoba oil with some of the anti inflammatory essential oils.
I am a qualified aromatherapist so know which ones to use and quanties. It would be worth consulting a local aromatherapist so that they can do a detailed consultation before recommending oils.

Yes it's only on prescription, it was something my mum had mentioned to me I cut out all dairy and swapped and changed foods and drinks to try and figure out if there was something he was reacting too and his milk was the only thing I didn't try as I tried him on cow & gate and he had terrible diarrhoea then suffered ridiculous nappy rash! I took him back & forth frequently they were so unhelpful to be honest the answer was always steroid cream. Then I took him off his follow on milk put him onto cows milk & it cleared up, I just wish I had done it earlier as I really believe that was the problem although the gp didn't agree, although I know they are professionals sometimes 'mother knows best'!

I agree with Gillian he needs to be allergy tested as a matter of urgency.

My son (age 8) still gets it occaisionally but when he was little poor thing was covered from head to toe till about 6 years old. I tried everything the drs would prescribe but nothing really helped. I became very reluctant to use the steroid creams on him as they have thinned his skin so much, especially on his face  I eventually tried Clarins Skin Repair Concentrate on him which is an oil and it is brilliant! Reduces redness, inflamation and it doesn't sting when it goes on. Its a very thin oil. Now at the first sign of anything flaring up I apply the oil and by the next day his skin is fine.

I know is an expensive option, but I was lucky as I used to work for them and got it as part of my product allocation, but I can honestly say I would be happy to buy it full price too.

My little one had awful eczema was so upsetting for us all, we pin pointed her problem and she was allergic to cows milk protein and soy and with my breastfeeding I had to omit that from my diet, thankfully she grew out of it around 9 months, she still gets the odd flare up of it but nowhere near as bad, skin salvation balm was a miracle in a jar for her. Hope it clears up soon is not a fun time. I didn't use the steroid cream much as it bothered me xx

My little boy had such bad skin when he was a baby. Very dry skin on cheeks, legs and arms.

He had diprobase, hydrocortisone for major flare ups and oilatum in his bath to soothe his skin, all 3 working a treat x

I wouldn't use sudocrem as although it is antiseptic it dries the skin out which will be making matters worse.

Hi Maby try coconut oil, it's nourishing and has anti fungal properties so will stop it getting infected. Works wonders on my hand eczema, I also use epaderm. X

Both my children have Eczema, they both had it from a few weeks after birth : (
We have tried all sorts of Lotions & Potions from the doctors but nothing really worked with the exception to the Steriod Cream.
I finally found that Aveeno Cream & Aveeno Bath/Shower Oil worked wonders - you can get this in Boots but its also available on prescription. I use the moisturising cream twice daily on the effected areas & also found that bathing them every other day rather than every day helped massively too.
I hope you find something that works for you, it is really stressful seeing your little ones suffer x

My little boy has a very rare form called acute discoid. From about 8 months it started flaring up and in talking to the point I had to cut his baby vests off him by the end of the day. It was on his face, in his hair and well, everywhere. Absolutely heart breaking. We took him Drs at least once a week and he even ended to hospitalised and was eventually referred to a skin professor who prescribed two lotions and we have never looked back. Here is what we learnt
Most children are allergic to aqueous cream and the only place it should be used is in the bath as its water based it aggravates their skin
Oilatum is great for excema in the scalp.
Wet wrapping does not work
Diet rarely makes a difference
Piroten is a god send in extreme circumstances but not to often as them become reliant on it.
You need oil based, water free creams. We use Double base every day twice a day, it feels like marshmallow! And Elecon (can't remember chemical name) on any wet patches and all over his body once a week
Feel free to PM me but I'd say above all push for a referral as there are at least 30 different types of excema which all need treating differently, your GP will just give you broad spectrum treatment x

Hi!
My 2 year old daughter has suffered from eczema on her face just next to her mouth for the last 4 months or so. The doctors have given me several things and each cream has made it flare and seems to irritate it- the only thing I found that soothed it was Vaseline- however never cleared it up completely. Being quite holistic and natural I went to my local herbal shop and the man said that you need to help it from the inside out which makes total sense and said she might have an allergy or and intolerance, he said dairy and wheat can make eczema worse so take her off cows milk and give her goats milk- which I have done- its seems to have helped dramatically although it can take up to 6-8 weeks to take effect, also Crabtree and Evelyn sell a moisturising cream that is lavender and goats milk which has also helped and is gentle enough to use on children. Try keeping a food diary too and jot down when the flare up happens depending on what they have eaten- food intolerances also come through in behaviour- erratic, naughty even so look out for this, lots of foods contain milk so read packaging. Chickweed cream is also very effective and natural but great for eczema on kids. Hope this helps and good luck! Xxx

Also if you need to bath him dunk him in give him a quick wipe down and straight out! Don't let him be in water for more than 5 mins

I think he needs to see a specialist ask to be reffered.

I would see a specialist before trying anything else and as others have said an allergy test is a must in my opinion.

Hope you get this sorted and he feel better soon :hug:xxx
