Hi all,
May i share my terrible day at work with you.

It was Saturday and i have only been at my new Salon for just over two weeks. I've been working as a qualified Nail Technician for many years now and although i was nervous in the early days, i'm quiet confindent in my work now. I've almost always had happy clients with only the the rare client that wasn't happy but that's to be expected as you can't make everyone happy no matter how hard you try.

But well this is long sorry...and i have learnt a BIG lesson from it...On the Thursday of the first week of my job i had a client come in for a Full Set of Acrylic nails. She told me and the owner of the shop that she had never had them before and didn't want them to look fake and that she wanted them as thin and short as possible.

I explained i will do my best to make them look as natural as possible but that i was a little concerned at how thin she wanted them as i usually don't do them this thin and that the thinner they are the more open they are to trouble. Splitting/cracking etc. Anyway she went away very happy. Then 5 days later she rand the salon and booked in for the coming Saturday to have them looked at because as she had never had them for sure was not sure if they were looking as they should (yes i told her to return in 2 weeks for her refill). Well when she got in she was quiet grumpy...she made sure the whole shop could hear as she complained about how dissapointed she was with her nails and wanted an answer as to why they looked as bad as they did.

Although there wasn't lifting they looked extremely worn away. I explained that there are many factors that can cause this such as they were too thin, is she on medication? stress? perhaps my products are not suited to her, she got quiet defensive and suggested i'm accusing her,,,she replied "well i've had Acrylic nails from plenty of places and this has NEVER happened before!" (yes she did say at the start i've neverhad nails before) then she just said rudely "just get them off!" other customers were turning around to look at me i was so embarassed.

After almost getting them off she started to become quiet friendly and chatty? i'm thinking what the hell? she then said to me "You know in my job i have to clean optical lenses about 10-15 a day using Methylated Spirits soaked in Cotton wool...do you think that ruined my nails?":mad:By this stage i had put up with all of her crap, told her the soak off was for free, only to have her tell me that. I could have died. She told me she has applied for another job in a different feild and would love to be able to have me put another set on her if she gets it. Well sorry i'll be booked out! :!:

Anyway the BIG lesson here for me was to print off the At Home care for Acrylic Nails do's and don'ts and spelling out do not use Acetone, Methylated spirits, Citrus solvents Etc for the morons out there lacking common sense. Fair enough some people don't know about acetone but Methylated spirits? I should have been giving these out anyway.

You live and you learn!

Sounds like a bad day, although at least you have the satisfaction of now knowing it wasn't your treatment. I would definately make sure you have the after care cards ready next time and like you say just take it as a lesson learnt. Sounds to me like you dealt with it very patiently

Well I wouldn't be fully booked next time .... I'd do her another set and happily take her money!

What I wouldn't take next time is anymore crapola if she returned with any other complaints.

Here here Geeg.....

Some people! why is every one out for a freebie... drives me nuts...

you would n't try and get a freebie out of a dentist or Dr... no way..

Wow sounds like a really bad day, but she must have done something to ruin them I've had acrylic nails that lasted weeks before

Some people are never going to be happy, no matter what you do for them and you can usually spot them a mile off.

Yes and you just put up with it and smile and take their money.

Then one day when you think you have had enough or the salon has been disrupted by them just once to often you say, "I think we'll do a soak off today!! Clearly you are not getting on with your enhancements so it would be best to take them off safely right now."

YOU JUST WAIT ... they will turn around and tell you they love their nails and no way do they want them soaking off. They will not bother you with too many complaints after that!! Works every time.

Some folks just have to moan. You only have to look at the blogs to see that most people moan rather than write anything positive or happy. Fortunately there are exceptions to the rule!

How FUNNY, i had the same thing happen to me today, well she come in saying she i didn't like her gel refills, as she normally has acrylic.. so i said ill buff them and gloss them up, she said she wanted them off... (as see looked at them) i said thats fine i could do that it would take a hour and cost $55 ... she then said WHAT i just paid $50 for a refill last week... and she wasnt happy paying $50 again.. i said i would do the buff for free but if she wanted them off i wasnt going to do it for free... it time and effort .. she then backed off and said no thats fine ill just have a buff then a refill of acrylic next time:).. im only 26 and look very young my clientell are mostly well to do 50+ ladies who like to push my bottons as im on my own now.

but i stood my ground and she was fine..

A god lesson for us all I think. Im just setting up mobile and nw making a mental note to d aftercare leaflets for all my treatments....

Its always tricky if you let the client tell you how you should be doing their nails. Obviously they have some control meaning shape and colour etc but to ask for them to be thinner is different. I try not to let the client decide certain things to me.
Also, have a good look first, if you have never seen a returning client with nails in a particular condition it can lead you to think the problems have been caused by the client and not yourself.

Dont beat yourself up too much about it, there is always one after a free ride but theres always a way to win with them. Now you know what to look for with this lady and knowing what she's said I would book her in and try to be a bit firmer with her xx

Thank you fellow geeks for your understanding,

I have made up my after care leaflets and give them to every new client. If i have time for example while their polish is drying i also talk them through their after care sheet with them, that way i know there is no misunderstandings.:!:

dont you do a client consultation?
