Experts from across the nail, beauty and spa industries have come together for the first time to support the development of Habia’s professional registers in nails, beauty and spa.

The first professional registers advisory committee meeting recently took place at SkillsActive HQ in London. The Beauty, Nails and Spa Advisory Committee are a group of professionals from across the industries with wide-ranging experience as employers, educators and in working for industry brands.

A key function of the Advisory Committee will be to guide how the registers need to operate in order raise standards in the sector, be responsive to industry developments and to add value for industry professionals, employers and consumers alike. As with the other voluntary professional registers operated by SkillsActive, the Advisory Committee is pivotal to ensuring credibility and integrity, ensuring that direction comes from the industry itself.

Jacque Vidal, Compliance and Standards Manager (Nails, Beauty & Spa) said,
"One of the first objectives of the group will be to define the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) criteria. A commitment to defined CPD is a critical feature of any professional workforce. Our industry can be very fast paced with new products, technologies and treatments being introduced frequently. Part of the registers' objectives is to ensure the sector has the skilled workforce to meet these challenges and provide exemplary service to clients."

HABIA Ambassador, Gina Akers, from Channel 4's The Salon, said, "I am in full support of HABIA and UKSkills Active's Professional Registers for Beauty, Nails and Spa. I am an advocate for maintaining professional standards in these industries. I believe these industries should be more regulated and HABIA's Professional Registers are a step in the right direction towards this."

The independent, voluntary registers were launched in October with support from the Government via UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES). They are delivered in partnership with SkillsActive who operate a number of professional registers including the highly successful Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).
