hey geeks

any recommendations for beauty therapy courses nvq or vtvt in london in evenings or weekends.

i posted previously about waxing course, but im considering doing it all over, because i am disappointed by my current course. im currently studying with bsy, theory was good, but attended prac and it was rubbish. the course is certified by the relevant people but i just feel like it isnt good enough anymore.

it´s depressing knowing that i spent so much time, effort and loads of research on my theory, it feels like a waste. iv gone backwards. at least i have the knowledge.

any help would be great.

at present i live in london.

Sorry to hear you feel like that, and I can't help with courses in London as I live in Southampton. BUT, don't feel that the training has been a waste. You've picked up loads of theory and you must have the basics of the practical. Do you have a waxpot? I only really started to improve when I bought one and just grabbed everyone I could to practice on - it helped so much. A lot of learning any beauty subject has to be practice or you'll never improve

Are there any other geeks who live near you who could maybe help you out with a bit of 1-2-1?

Good luck, I hope you get sorted soon.

Rouge has given a great suggestion, maybe you could swap services with another geek.

Thanks for your advice, I already feel better :) i am not going to let it get me down.

Actually, I do have a wax pot and i do my own waxing, hot and warm. Been doing it for a few years now, had a friend who studied beauty therapy so learnt a bit with her. And she and my sister practised manicures and pedis on me.

I also worried about getting a job though.

Where abouts in London are you? Maybe some geeks can help?

I'm in North London

That covers quite an expanse! North East or North West?? willing to give us a town??

There are also lots of colleges in the London area that offer courses, it just depends where your looking, and what price you're looking at as well.

Just to clarifym as it wasn't clear from your last post, and i don't think i've read your waxing one (sorry if i've replied to is, i have a dreadful memory today!), but your course at BSY, was this a short course leading to their own certificate, or were you studying for an NVQ / IHBC qualification with them. Bear in mind that you have the right as a student to make your feelings known about the quality of the teaching. If you have paid for it and feel it is inadequate, make your voice heard!!

I'm always happy to help other geeks - haven't really had the opportunity so far, but i work in London anyway so depending on where you are it wouldn't be a long trip.

Also, don't worry about getting a job until you have the qualifications you want. It will all come in time. No point stressing about the future, you can only control the here and now, and that will determine the future!

I am in Edmonton, North London.

As far as fees goes, I will just have to see how much the courses are...you can´t really put a price on education but at the same time im far from a millionaire lol. The maximum time I am willing to study is another 2 years or less as want to emigrate.

I am not yet finished my course I am busy doing it still. Beauty therapy and then Beauty Specialist. I was informed by the college that I will get insured at the end of my course and that it can lead to an NVQ... I cant remember exactly how she said I go about doing this....
So im not exactly sure what qualification I get, besides a diploma. But when I enrolled initially I thought that this was sufficient. I suppose I could always carry on with this course and find out how I go about getting an NVQ.

I know I can complain but I doubt it will change the course, so I would rather just move now. My main concern is the practical, I am good at theory and a quick learner.

Thanks for your help.

I just called them to clarify.

On completion of my first course I get a Practioners certificate and second course a Proffessional certificate of merit, which is similar to an NVQ 2 & 3 respectively.

I can only get NVQ through an employer though if I wish to get one.

But will I get hired????

I think the question you need to ask your college is the name of the governing body awarding your qualification. They say that the diploma's are directly comparable to an nvq 2 & 3, but i haven't heard of these qualifications, so if they can tell you the name of the governing body, for e.g. HABIA, VTCT, that will give you some peace of mind that you have obtained a qualification that potential employers will recognise.

The fact that they said to you that you would "go on to do NVQ" would suggest to me that these are not directly comparable to NVQ's but that further study to obtain these qualifiactions are required. For e.g., a college can run a course and offer their own "in-house" qualification. This is only goverened by that college and would not generally be classed as a recognised qualification. You can, however, put that college's in-house qualification towards a recognised qualification, for e.g. NVQ or IHBC, and then by doing some extra work and being assessed by a governing bodies assessors you would obtain one of these.

does this make sense???

Just to add, i trained with The Carlton Institute, who offer their own "in-house" diploma, with the option of further study for an NVQ. My diploma's were accepted by BABTAC for insurance, but i still was not qualified to provide the treatments. (btw, i am qualified now!)

As far as I know, it is accredited by BABTAC.
Do not know who else, will have to find out.

That is good news about being able to still get a NVQ if i carry on, but i think i prefer to do it all over with a new place. just have to find somewhere that does evening or weekends in london, which is very hard.

thank you sooo much for your help :green:
