Hi

I am a qualified Nail Tech looking to expand in to the rest of the Beauty Industry.....I have a dilemma....

I want to study asap eg do the NVQ 2 (VTCT) - I can do this at college part time over I think a year or I have found a place where I can do it in weeks rather than a year on a really intensive course.
Can anybody give me advice - I would prefer to go the intense route.....is this the right thing to do??

i found that the more intense courses u get more hands on time and less paper work . i think it just depends on how well u do under pressure in tryin to do so much in short amount of time too xx

I have done both intense courses privately and NVQ's through college and I would personally recommend going to college and doing it over the year for something so hands on as an NVQ level 2 (VTCT) beauty therapy.

With an intense course you will not get anywhere near enough hands on practice, doing it through college gives you the chance to work on paying clients and also to practice on your peers in the class, whereas taking the intense option you will be racing through the practical and not get enough hands on practice.Yes you will do case studies and the like, but it's not the same as having the lecturer there checking on you throughout your treatments, correcting you if need be and giving you any feed back that may be necessary.

I have found that a lot of therapists lack the confidence when they have done the fast track option. This is because they just haven't had the chance to practice as much given the fact they were so short on time.I have had to practically re train a therapist in waxing in the salon because she was confused in how to carry out certain waxing treatments on certain areas. These areas she told me she literally did one assessment and after the whole unit forgot the routine etc.

Anyway, good luck with what you choose to do.

Hi,
For my NVQ level 2 in Beauty Therapy I trained 14 weeks, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5. (Private college) Theory and practice have been covered in classroom for each module. After written tests (to pass it nedeed to be at least %75) and practical assessments in classroom we practiced in the salon on paying clients. We had also assessments in the salon.
Now I feel confident to carry out any treatment i have been trained for.
I will do the same for NVQ 3. It is intensive and a bit tiring but I think it is worth.

Good luck whatever you choose!

I did my NVQ 2 over a year, 2 nights a week and even that way felt that sometimes we didn't get enough practice/troubleshooting in before we were being assessed on clients (waxing especially) - so god knows how I'd have managed doing an even faster-tracked one.

Hi Ketigun,
Hope you don't mind me asking but how much roughly did u have to pay for that course? I am studying a NVQ2 in beauty therapy at a normal college and due to my age and previous qualifications I am paying over a grand to do so. Was wondering if it was worth paying a little extra to do my level 3 in a shorter time period? Thanks x

Hi Spanner
For NVQ level 3 it is £2700. I had £400 off (when I enroled for NVQ 2 it was an offer). A bit expensive but I am pleased with what I achieved. I hope it will be the same with this one.
Feel free to ask if you want to Know more.
