Hi there guys!!! Hope you are all ok??

I have been thinking about becoming an assessor for a while now..
I just did a forum search but didn't find what I am looking for..

Basically, I am from Staffordshire and am REALLY interested in assessing for beauty qualifications due to my passion for the beauty trade..

However.. I only have a Beauty Specialist Techniques Diploma, and an
Acrylic Tip & Overlay Diploma..

Don't worry, I am almost sure that this would not be enough to persue this career??... I just want to know what exact routes I have to take you see..

I would like to know if colleges/agencies etc would employ someone like myself to do the assessor award whilst employed by them....???

My friend has done this for her hospitality assessing you see..

I do though understand that this may just simply be entirely different rules..

Any help or advice would be much appreciated,

Thanks alot for your time!!

Sarah xxxxx :)

Hello there

most colleges of further education require you to be a teacher as well as an assessor. In fact you have to do everything, including looking after your students' emotional well being. There may be agencies that provide assessors, but I have no knowledge of this.

If you want to find out more contact the beauty department of your local college - simple as that. As a college lecturer I have requests for information about becoming a teacher all the time.

If you teach in a college you must be properly qualified to Certificate of Education standard or be working towards. Recent legislation means that you can no longer be involved in college training without teaching qualifications. There was a time when the teacher could just pass on their skills - that's no longer the case, there is no such thing as an "amatuer" trainer anymore.

This brings me back to assessing. The modern qualification for assessors is called the A1 Award, which should take about a year to complete depending upon how much access you get to students doing assessments. You will need a mentor to countersign your assessment decisions, they need to be fully qualified obviously! Assessing is often about doing the paper work, being very equal opportunities aware and being excellent at giving constructive feedback - consistency is also key. You may also be expected to assess written assignment work.

I wish you lots of luck, if it's what you want to do, go for it.:)

Thank you very much for that Malteser!!

If you need to have teaching qulaifications as well as assessor qualifications to be an assessor, then this is obviously alot more training, knowledge and certificates/awards that is required!!!

Dam!!

Oh well, I'll look more into this,

Thanks again!! xx

Hi

At my local college the minimum requirement before you even start your introduction to teaching is to have Level 3 in your chosen subject.

If your college are really short of teachers they will sometimes put you through your training, and fast track your level 3.

Thanks Tracy.
It is actually the Assessing that I am very interested in you see, not particularly teaching.

hi

in that case why dont you contact rachel 'chocolate' and ask her, as she is an assessor.

I know when i did my level 3 nails i was only assessed and not taught anything.

To assess you would need to hold your A1 certificate, this will enable you to assess students working towards nvq's or vtct.
there are assessors that work just doing this and not teaching, why dont you give a couple of colleges a call and try to get onto the A1 course but also you would need to find someone who can be your mentor and countersign any assessments which you make and give you access (sp) to students which are working towards these quals.

hth.
