Good morning ladies and gents.
My name is Claire and I am really interested in doing a general nail course.
I have no experience in the industry at all and will be starting from scratch.
I've been searching the Internet for weeks but have no idea what I am looking at.
At the moment I want to start with manicures and pedicures, later moving onto gel polish.
I am based in Cambridge, so local training centres would be amazing!!
Thanks
Xx

If you are looking for an all encompassing, general 'nails' training then your local further education college is your best bet. It's entry level nails course will cover all aspects on a basic level, at a reasonable cost and over a long enough period to properly learn and understand. Once you know what you are doing you can take further courses on specialised skills. A college course is the best introduction to 'everything' - if you were looking to specifically train in 'Gel Polish' for instance then I would suggest a different route.

Please don't get sucked into one-day Nail tech courses, they are a rip off

I want to do just gel manicures and possibly pedicures, but due to my lack of experience no idea where to go

I have enrolled on a level 3 Nail Technology VTCT course which is great as we are covering basically all the nail services. I am really enjoying it and am so glad I’m doing the in-depth course xx

Unfortunately I am nit in a position to do a VTCT course

That’s a shame. I didn’t think I would be either but I found a funded course that is either one day a week/evening/weekend which worked out perfectly.

All the best xx

May I ask where you are training?

Of course, it’s called the Little Beauty School in the Jewellery Quarter Birmingham. The travelling is a bit of a menace but it’s worth it for the course x

That's a trek from Cambridge, but will look into it

I know there are other venues that do offer the funded level 3 and tend to be flexible on course times so it’s definitely worth looking into x

To offer Gel Polish manicures you need to train in Gel Polish, to train in Gel Polish you need a Manicure Qualification. To offer Pedicures is a seperate qaulification again, those three courses alone (at a good independant training facility) will cost you a little less than the full college course. On the college course you will learn those 3 plus extensions in gel and L&P. It makes sense to do an all encompassing course if possible in the beginning.

If you want to go to an independant training facility look at SweetSquared (based in Leeds but acadamies all over the country). The Nail Team have a good reputation on here too. The Creative Beauty Acadamy (based in Hampshire, again other locations available) are also very good.

I have done CND training in gel and gel enhancements. And there training was excellent.

I was looking at their courses, only thing I could find was that their training is in Manchester, which is a 4hr drive for me. Do you know if they have training centres other than there? Xx

If you go to sweetsquared.com and check there education link on the side. It shows you where there training centres are

I am really interested in this school you have done your course at, what was it like, I would be self funded

Hazel Dixon Nailartist Academy has an educator in Cambridge who’s brilliant. The head office is in Thetford so is also not too far from you. You can find details of locations from the HD academy on hazeldixon NailartistAcademy.com then on the drop menu course dates and locations.
