Hi
A few weeks ago when I took my varnish off I noticed some discolouration on both big toes. Immediately I went an bought some stuff from the chemist, thinking it was a fungal infection. Anyway just now I gently filed both toenails as that was what the bottle said to do before applying the ointment. I looked closely at the said nail and it looked like another nails was growing? as there was a ridge close to the base... anyway it just fell off!! Eewwww I have never had this before and not sure what i do now? There is about 2mm left I wonder if thats the new nail growing, it doesnt hurt yet?! Do I cover it up now with a plaster?? Help I feel so gross now, and wonder if the other big toenail will come off next?

Don't panic, it is the new nail that is left and now you will just have to wait for the nail to grow through .. it won't happen quickly ... you will need to expect 6-9 months before the nail is completely replaced. You can wear a false nail for special occasions. No need for a bandage .. let the air get to it.

You may loose the other nail too. It sounds as if they have been under considerable pressure ... have you been running or climbing or maybe done a charity run?? Something you do not usually do? This can happen after an unusual amount of pressure has been put on the big toenails. It doesn't sound like a fungus to me .. you would notice a fungus for sure. It sounds like bad bruising through pressure. You could always see a podiatrist for a professional diagnosis.

It/they will grow back just like new.

The other one has gone now too, well most of it. Yes Geeg I did do a charity run few months ago actually and funnily enough Id forgotten but at the time my toenails did hurt from the pressure. I see I have probably done damage through that, I have funny toenails anyway and be careful when buying shoes as I can get pressure on the toenails, my mum had the same problem also.
I can breathe a sigh of relief now that I dont need to panic and I will get my nails back eventually. Thanks Geeg

Toe nails that are too long and rubbing on your shoes can cause this....they should be regularly clipped and kept short.

as long as it doesnt hurt it should be grand don`t panic :)

I had a client this week with the same problem on one big toe, she had about 2mm of a nail, it definately was'nt fungal just had broken a while back. She's gettin married tomorrow so i bridged the nail using L+P then french polished as normal.

It looked very well, barely noticable now i kept them short and she will be in to me regularly to have pedicures so i can keep an eye on it.

Was i right to do this??
i have on myself in the past with no problems

I did exactly the same and gelled a new nail on !

Im booked in tomorrow to have a Wilde Pedique done as I cant stand the look of them. I realise they will take a while to grow back so I am going down the route of the Wilde pedique as Ive read its perfect for this kind of thing. That will teach me to wear uncomfortable trainers whilst running!! I didnt realise the trauma to the nail until it was too late.

I buy trainers one size too big for running/exercise. Sorry a bit off topic but relevant :)
