Please help! I have recently qualified in Bio Sculpture and carried out a french polish on a friend with short nails. She picks at them and I have pursuaded her to have Bio to to help kick the habit. So carry out french polish, no probs, looks lovely, she loves them and wants to keep it up.

So, first time I did then, she phoned after 1 week to say the tips have gone black....I was baffled, never happened to anyone else before. She told me she had been eating liqorice sweets in black packaging...hmm, maybe it was that. She removed it with acetone herself before I could take a look. So I redone them for nothing over a week ago and today she phoned and said they were a little black again??? She said she hasn't been eating those sweets again. I wracked my brian and asked whether she has been reading news papers, magazine which she said she had...could this be the reason?? I made sure I sealed the free edge but as they are quite short. She also said she has a new cheap black handbag?? Could this be the reason or does anyone else have any ideas...I'm baffled. Any advice would be greatly received.

So its the gel not the nail going black? If so, then i would suspect something rubbing off too - so no more freebies!!

Fake tan? Hair dye?

Bio doesn't discolour unless in comes into contact with something that leaches colour into it. Yes, its quite porous, but not that bad...you have to do somethingfairly drastic for it to go black.

My honest opinion....she's coloured her hair or something and taken them off before you can determine that it's not your fault!

hi, i have had the same happening to my bio nails and it is either my hair dye which turns my nails red and i have also had black too which is from a new pair of black jeans i have bought.

Hi This was mentioned on the recent bio training I was on recently and it was recommended that the top coat was reapplied weekly to prevent possible staining. I am new to bio but I would have thought she must have done something quite drastic for them to have turned black.:)

Thanks for your replies. She doesn't dye her hair herself, she goes once a week, doesn't do fake tans but does wack on the bronzing powder. Because they are short I was wondering if maybe I hadn't sealed them properly and maybe print was seeping in between the gels? What do you think?

If you have applied a top coat to protect the gels then inform your client that she can remove this with non acetone nail varnish remover. If the 'black' appears on the top coat then any discolouration should come off with the remover.

Newspaper is the main culprit of this but is easily removed by the above.

However, if it is something more sinister and she has removed them before you had a chance to look at them then 'no freebies' as you did not have a chance to take a look to establish whether it was an application error, which i doubt it was.

Product and time costs money, so charge!!

I went out one night (piss up) - and the next morning my nails were stained.

I think it was the ash trays on the tables (when you could smoke in the pubs) mixed with alcohol that stained mine - I am convinced of it - cos I don't / didn't do anything else.

Hi,

Although a newbwi geek, I have been using Bio for the last 7 years and found that it can be discloured when wearing a new pair of black trousers or sometimes jeans especially when new. So a night out is a common time for this to happen as that is often when a new garment is worn. It happened to me when I wore a new pair of black pyjamas, they have been washed a few times and it still happens.
I always ask client if they have been wearing any new clothing and if its a dark colour. I have found this to be the usual reason.
You can lightly buff the top layer of the gel and will find the discolouration will dissapear, then just reseal with gel or top-coat.

Hope this clears it up for you!!!!

Thanks to all who replied. I saw my client today and her nails weren't as bad as she was saying, yes slightly black at end of free edge. I'm convinced it's from newspaper/magazine print and black dye of her new black badgthat she showed me. It is a cheap £3 one from Primark, so dye could be coming off. Thanks all x

Hi, I'm also qualified in bio and just wondered if you had used the s gel as the top layer as the gel is very pourous and especially the white! and the s gel is a tougher gel than the sealer or clear! i would imagine you would of but just checking lol x:)

My guess would be the jeans. I do calgel and my mam has french. She finds her nails stain black and has always thought it was the leather steering wheel from her car (?)
I asked her if she was wearing 'those' jeans and she was like... 'ohhh, yeah!'

She never rembembers her topcoat so gel has no protection from anything soaking in!

Hi,

I am not a proffesioal but ask your friend if she has been wearing Black leather gloves, this may be the problem as when wearing my leather gloves I get the same effect

hi i use calgel and this also has happened to one of my clients, it more than likely is the newspaper or is she putting her hands into black coat pockets?? as this is common cause of discolouration at this time of year.. and im just wondering do you retail your top coat to clients as with calgel we do and it prevents this sort of thing from happening??
also wondering if maybe you are not removing the sticky residue completely as this has happened to me??

A similar thing has happened to me:cry:. A client who has had coloured gel on her fingers and toes had Bio French on fingers and toes at the weekend. She has just texted to say they have gone black at the free-edge and her hands have greyish streaks all the way to the free-edge. She is a fab client who would be ver up front if she did anything she shouldn't have. I have asked her to remove the top coat with acetone free nail polish remover and to re-apply top coat.

I will keep you posted.

She is in the early couple of months of pregnancy but I wouldn't expect that to cause such a calamity:rolleyes:.
