Hi Hair Geeks!

I'm an MUA and beauty therapist and do quite a lot of weddings/proms (mainly make-up).

I'm not trained in hairdressing but would like to add bridal/prom hairstyling to my business, so over the past year have been doing some styling/hair up courses and learning from hairdresser friends. I reckon it'll be at least next year before I feel confident enough to offer hair styling as a service though!

In the meantime I'm interested to know what the most popular styles have been for your brides and prom girls over the last couple of years (if you do this type of work of course!)?

And if any of you offer mobile bridal/prom hair services in Hampshire/Southampton do get in touch as I am likely to have work for you!

x

I do wedding hair within the surrey area. At the moment ladies are asking for barrel curls or long soft drop curls and if there hair is a little too short I'm applying small hair pieces to extenuate and apply body.

Thanks for your reply! Do you have a stock of hair pieces or do you buy them in for each bride? How does using hair pieces affect your pricing?

I'm booked on another bridal hair course in a couple of weeks so it'll be interesting to see what they say! x

Trial Run Prices
Bride £75
Bridesmaids £35 - 40
Mother/Mother-in-law/Guests From £15 - 45
Additional trials From £35
Wedding Day Prices
Bride From £75 - 130
Bridesmaids under 12 From £20 - 35
Bridesmaids over 12 and adult From £25 - 50
Mother/Mother-in-law/Guests From £20 - 45
All prices shown are a guide and will be finalised once I know the styles required. I like to price each person separately so that you know exactly what you are paying for.
There is a £50 surcharge for Sundays for wedding hair. Additional £5 for set of 10 Hair extension curls and for full hair pieces another £ 45.
I only keep very small amount of hair pieces in as I tend to compare the clients hair first so not to have too much stock but to keep a small amount of base colour weaves to get by for trials :) good luck with the bridal course :)

Let us know how your bridal hair course goes. I tend to wing my hair ups and I'd like to know it's worthwile sending myself on a course. :)

Yeh it is so well worth it and it is so easy to pick up :)

That's great thank you. What are the best courses? I've seen Capital advertising them..

Capital do some fab courses and I wish loads more hairdressers would go because if there isn't enough attending they cancel the course and it's a real shame. I went to Patrick Cameron and I know it's alot of doe but I learnt so much from him it was unbelievable in the two day course what I learnt. It paid dividends after two weddings. He was so fab with the four of us and I highly recommend it. But capital and sallys will do just aswell it was the case I was looking for something a little different but there all good.

Ooh I'd like to go on the Patrick Cameron one! One of his assistants does one too which is a bit cheaper x

Just looked at his website. Ah-mazing!
Uhh given the prices...I think Marco Erbi is looking a little more realistic for me!

Oh wow...
Ive just had a look too viva glam!
This really interests me, I would love to specialise in bridal. My mind isnt that creative on the hair up side!

I don't do a lot of hair ups/brides... in fact I only do like 3 a year maybe lol I've done more casual hair ups for some of my regulars who are going out! I'm really considering going on a Marco Erbi course (more my price range) or a capital bridal hair course and I was thinking about it last night lots. I then thought, I'll do all the colouring courses I want to go on first and maybe do a hair up course because I do mostly colouring. Today I had THREE clients book their weddings with me (a couple aren't until next year!) and I've got another couple of clients getting married that want me to do their hair!! You get NOTHING then everything all at once!! These clients are so down to earth, as luckily most of my clients are, so they're happy with whatever. I feel like I can manage it but I'm actually bricking it! I don't get nervous about much and I am really excited and flattered they've asked me but now I want to get on a bridal course stat!!

Would you recommend any good books/dvds for bridal hair and general hair ups?
And while we are on the subject, do you offer a bridal package? Hair, nails, make up etc. If you catch my drift? I've just suggested the idea of a package to my boss and want to get an idea of what kind of prices you'd charge for these, obviously depending on what they'd include.

God I'm feeling a bit giddy now!

Ahhh well done... try not to panic, I always do when it comes to hair up!
I brought a head block :/ and i practice on that quite often, I got a few DVD's from Salon International, and then have just ordered some from ebay, nice classic styles, And once you do them once you remember exactly how to do it for next time and you just adapt and change it!
Ive got a bride in on monday for her trial and its this burlesque/vintage 1940s 1950s style, its beautiful but when she sent me the picture I freaked waaaay out my comfort zone.... played around with it and cracked it first time!
The way I see it, You might not be 100% happy with the hair up that you do because its not perfect... but in ur clients eyes it will be because they will never ever be able to produce what you do in a million years, we are perfectionists! And practice makes perfect!
I am freelance at the moment, and need to revise my pricing.... im charging £25 for trial and £35 on the day for wedding... which is quite low i think, Seeing as I lose sleep over my clients haha!!
But in ur salon if you offer all them services a package would be ideal.. Maybe offer a certain percentage off final price if a certain amount of treatments are booked, rather then having something free.
I'd do your bridal hair up course before your colouring, come out of ur comfort zone :)

No as I'm not trained in the beauty area, however I do have a beautician who I recommend and she does come along with me. I'm finding more and more brides now going to high street stores and having a make up rehearsal in there and then buying the make up. This is having a small impact on my friends business. I did a wedding yesterday and the brides did the same thing

Alot of brides now are going for more relaxed styles and not clean shiny tight look, what do you think?

Hey hun,

Just seen your previous posts about Patrick Cameron, he is amazing (my hero) so if you ever get the chance, highly recommend to train with him. I also go to his seminars once a year for about £70, he showcases his new collection and goes through the step by step of how he did each style.....i come away from that equally as inspired and full of new techniques! His latest book the bridal album is fabulous and so is his bridal collection DVD!

I offer hair and makeup packages at the minute (pre-wedding hair treatments, colour & cut, wedding hair and make-up trials and on the day) and just trained in eye enhancements and lash extensions so i can offer a complete look, dont do any other beauty treatments though!

Yep totally agree, went through a stage of every bride wanted long loose curls, half up half down a while ago  but more recently alot more want hair ups, some looser softer styles and some quite intricate as well, love it!

Loads of bridesmaids wanting the tousled side bun at the minute aswel!

xXx
