I had a lady in for a facial the other day and she said she had lots of lumps and bumps under her skin, I started doing a facial and her skin looked normal, no particular oily or dry patches and no comedones etc.

But

she had stacks of little lumps under the skin.

I felt a little stumped by it.

Any advice?

Were they squishy? could be pockets of liquid (like congestion) from sinuses etc? or maybe old scarring from previous papules? I also had a client asking about this and to be honest it could be anything - massage helps smooth skin as does exfoliation but if she had lots then maybe she should seek medical advise maybe dermatologist or gp. L

thanks for that.
she said she had no sensitivity to anything, didn't seem bothered by it, and no they weren't particularly squishy.
Appearance wise, you couldn't tell, but obviously when your having a good feel around whilst applying cleanser I was quite shocked by them as thought she had been exaggerating.

Were they quite small ? Almost invisible looking ?

I developed a few of these on my cheeks a couple of years ago and every therapist I have encountered since for facials has made a completely different disgnosis to the last one !

When I did some Jane Iredale training the trainer seemed to think it was because the blusher I used at the time had lots of parabens in, since then I changed everything over to JI and they never improved then when I became pregnant they spread all over both cheeks. They are not visible at all unless I look at them from certain angles in the mirror and they are just blended into my skintone.

The only thing that improved them was when I had a crystal clear facial, not that the therapist had a clue what they were, she tried to tell me they were normal whiteheads and I should just squeeze them !! Anyway about 2 weeks after the facial they were just the same as before :(

Of all the clients have done I have never come across them before so im stumped to !

yes Juliette,
quite small, it was like tiny pin heads under the skin and yes, around the cheeks but also some on forehead.

She asked me what i thought and I just didn't know what to say.

Was her skin dry?

I have some of those just on my cheek bones, under my eyes. I've had them for years.
I was told they were little fatty deposits due to using an oily moisturiser when younger.
They occasionally come up to the surface and a little white lump pops out:o.
I have tried scrubbing them and everything lol (not too vigorously ) but I still have them.
Would love to know if anyone knows how to get rid of them for good, although they aren't too noticable.
xx

**I am not a skin pro and not giving any advise **

These sound like those little lumps that some people (i have seen on men and women) have on the top of their arms.....i think its called keratosis pilaris

i have these...like tiny whiteheads but not pop-able...sorry if it sounds disgusting. one person said it was becaude my skin was dehydrated but two other beauty therapists (who have more experience in skin treatments) said they were milia and one gave me....*running to get the bottle of stuff* md formulations vit a plus anti aging eye complex. was £45 and i wasn't promsied an overnight cure but it is helping. but what was originally desribed in this post doesnt sound the same as me...the last post did sound similar though. i get them under my eyes, on tops of cheeks and a few on eyelids. mum gets them too!!

the active ingredient which helps with this problem is hyaluronic acid. apparently. :D

I used to suffer with a bumpy forehead. They were not milia, I just felt kind of lumpy. I believe that I was particularly congested in this area with blocked pores.

Regular exfoliation using an AHA product should help this client sort out her problems. It has sorted me out - no more lumps!

she had very slightly oily T zone and her cheeks were everso slightly dry.

Hmmmm, food for thought.

psml at you Bagpuss! techno terms.

I haven't got them on my forehead just cheeks.

I have had milia before at the same time as these lumps and they were very similar but im not convinced these are the same thing.

keratosis pilaris is normally quite red in appearance and almost rough to the touch.
I have it on my upper arms and it is clearly visible so i dont think it sounds the same.

I do suffer from underlying congestion particularly on the forehead and sometimes my chin, i can only describe it as small lumps but no redness or 'head' forms , they usually disappear after some extra attention with masks and double cleansing etc

Hope you manage to get to the source of it!

I was worried about over working the skin, but it seems that the general consensus is to do extra work, is that right?

I've had clients in with this 'bumpy' skin. I think sometimes when the skin is dehydrated, sebum can get trapped under the epidermis. One client in particular had these bumps on her cheeks towards the side of the nose and also on her forehead. She has oily skin but the skin was dehydrated. After prescribing products for oily/dehydrated her skin became alot clearer. Do you think that this lady's skin could also be dehydrated???

yes, she could have dehydrated skin, she said she didn't drink much water in the consultation.

is their any other quick tests I can do to check if she has dehydrated skin?

Sorry but was this not covered in your training?!

Skin may show signs of dehydration even if the client were drinking pints of water every day - it is not the only factor.

Using your first 2 fingers, gently push the skin together, if it resembles orange peel then that is a good indication that it is dehydrated.

If so, she needs firstly a thorough efoliation treatment, but I would prefer an AHA rather than granular product as it is more gentle on the skin. Facial massage will help and she needs to look at her diet too - is she getting enough EFA's (essential fatty acids - Omega 3 & 6) as this will effect the skin too.

You can use a 'drawing' mask on the congested areas and a hydrating one on the dryer parts.

Encourage a good homecare routine too.

Did the doctor say you have Rosacea on your arms?

Thanks for your reply, yes, I do that on the skin when doing a massage so why I didn't think of doing it on the face is my error.
